PBIS - Positive Behavior Supports and Intervention
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional and academic success. When staff, students and families know the the school’s vision (Big Hollow School District #38 will be a model of student achievement for elementary school districts in the State of Illinois) and schoolwide expectations (STAR: Safety, Take Responsibility, And Respect), as well as the practices and common language there is consistency among all stakeholders. Consistency matters in developing a safe and predictable environment.
Primary prevention (Tier 1) is provided to all students and focuses on giving students the necessary pro-social skills that prevents the establishment and occurrence of problem behavior. If done systematically and comprehensively with fidelity, we know that will be sufficient for about 80% of our students. For a small group of students (typically around 10-15%) we will need to add another layer of support- secondary/tier 2/targeted supports. The goal of secondary prevention is to reduce/prevent the likelihood of problem behavior occurrences, and to enable these students to be supported by the school-wide PBIS effort. Still, a small number/few students (about 1-5% ) will need yet another layer of very individualized/intensive support. The goal of tertiary/tier 3 supports is to reduce the intensity, complexity, and impact of the problem behaviors displayed by these students by providing supports that are function-based, contextually appropriate and person-centered.
This is what is happening @ Primary and Elementary:
*School wide expectations (STAR) taught in all locations in the building and on the bus.
*First assemblies to introduce PBIS expectations and “Starbucks.” Starbucks
are used to reinforce following expectations and can be used in raffles and to buy
items or special privileges.
*Both buildings began Calm Classroom at arrival and after lunch/recess (3 minute scripted mindfulness-based techniques to teach self-awareness, mental focus & emotional resilience).
*Both buildings began teaching Second Step and will occur weekly. Second Step is a universal, research based classroom social/emotional curriculum. It helps improve kids’ ability to learn, control their own behavior and get along with others
If you have any questions about Primary PBIS, please contact Donna Kretsch, Social
Emotional Counselor & PBIS Building Coach at 847-740-5320, ext. 3004 or Elementary PBIS, contact Kathryn Keenon, PBIS Tier 1 Coach at 847-740-5321, ext. 4112.

At the Primary School, a goal of 5000 books has been established and at the Elementary School, we are challenging the students to read 100,000 pages collectively. When the students reach their goal, they will challenge Principals, Mrs. Janusz and Dr. Biancalana to a challenge of their own!! We will keep you posted on the challenge the students select. Some of the recent ideas sound like great fun!!

Call In Attendance Procedures
It is the responsibility of the parents/guardians to ensure that their child is in school. If absence is due to any communicable disease, please notify the school.
Parent/guardians must call their child’s school to report their child absent by 8:45 a.m. for Primary and Elementary School students. The Primary School telephone number is 847-740-5320; the Elementary School number is 847-740-5321. There is a 24-hour voice mail system for your use in reporting absences. If you do not report your child’s absence, the school must make a reasonable attempt to contact the parent/guardian to confirm the child’s absence.
When a child is late for school, that student is considered tardy. The tardy student and parent must stop at the office, be signed in by the parent/guardian, and get a pass before going to class.
Morning Drop Off Procedures
ONLY Big Hollow school buses will use the drop off/fire lane in front (west side) of Big Hollow Primary and Elementary Schools.
Parents who wish to park and walk their child in should continue to park in FRONT (west side) of the school and must walk their child all the way to the front doors. Parents will need to exercise caution when walking between school buses and must only walk in the cross walks.
Parents who would like to drop their child off in the drop off lane will enter the parking lot at the entrance to Big Hollow Middle School ONLY. Please proceed to the drop off lane behind Big Hollow Primary and Elementary Schools which will be clearly marked with the large yellow drop off signs and cones. Please ONLY drop your child off in between the large yellow drop off signs. Do not drop your child off before the large yellow signs. Do not drop your child off after the large yellow signs. Children must exit vehicles on the curb side only. Parents must not exit the vehicle. Once your child has exited the vehicle, please pull forward as soon as it is safe to do so and exit the parking lot by continuing past the elementary playground and past the soccer field and exit at the entrance to Big Hollow Middle School. Please do not stop and wait for your child to enter the building.
Thank you for following these procedures so that we can ensure a safe arrival for all of our students and staff.
