1. Just because the holiday passes...
This is a great opportunity to explore the Civil Rights Movement and to get to know more about Dr. King and his work beyond the very famous I Have a Dream Speech. We cannot assume that our students know about the movement or Dr. King, and we want to make sure that the day is seen as more than just a day off. In fact it is and can be so much more.
While legislation was signed in 1983 to make the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a federal holiday… In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with leading this effort.
Each year, on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is observed as a "day on, not a day off." MLK Day of Service is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community."
There are so many great conversations and learning opportunities to be had here. Please review the resources below and consider using them with your students:

For reflection: What conversation has already taken place in your classroom around Dr. King and the Civil Right Movement? IF good conversation has taken place, how can it be extended? What do you need to make it happen?

3. Equity in Action
This week I started meeting with Grade Level Teams about our work on Equity. I will be meeting with the other teams in the next week or so. The conversation is a continuation of some dialogue that we had when the ADL visited in August for our Anti Bias Education work.
One of the things that our Equity in Action Team here at Bristol had discussed was wanting to try and create a place where teachers could go to find resources in support in their work in the classroom. We would like to encourage you to check out the folder and see what you might be able to use, but also think about what you might be able to add!

For reflection: How might you be able to us resources in your folder to improve instruction in your classroom? What might you already be doing that you can share with others?
