Learning to Sew in our Maker Space
Nevaeh has been learning to sew in the mornings. To get ready to make a pillowcase using our sewing machine, Nevaeh spent several mornings practicing sewing straight seems on scrap fabric.
8th Grade Students Learn about Researching and Searching for Reliable Sources
Students in Mr. Feste's classes came to the library twice this month for lessons on internet searching for reliable sources and on researching and taking notes. These students are working on a research project in Mr. Feste's class.
3D Printing Continues to Excite Students
Zach was proud to get his 3D design printed. It took two prints to get it to look like he wanted it. In commenting about the design process taking two attempts, he said, "Mistakes are the mother of invention. Am I right or am I right?".
Greg Howard, visiting author from Tennessee, Presents to 6th Grade Students
Sixth grade students were treated to a presentation by local author, Greg Howard. Mr. Howard talked about his new book, The Whispers and about the writing process.
7th Grade Math Enrichment Breakout
Students in Ms. Pawelek's, Ms. Kiecker's, and Ms. Phelps' classes earned a math enrichment time in the library. During this time, they worked together to breakout by answering questions and riddles relating to pi.
7th Grade Students Learn about the Research Process
Students in Ms. Drakeford's classes came to the library for a lesson on the research process, note taking (without copying), and citing sources. These students are working to complete a research project in connection with the novel, A Long Walk to Water.
Battle of the Books
Nine students earned a spot on our Battle of the Books team (Isaak D., Kamryn O., Kaylin O., Mateo M., Morgan B., Paris M., Zoe S., Isabelle H., Sophia L.). These students meet on Wednesdays to practice answering questions on the twenty-seven books. Ms. Kiecker and Ms. Sturdivant are the coaches for this year's team. The team will travel to Buncombe County Schools' Central Office on February 22 to compete against other BCS' middle and intermediate schools.
6th Grade ELA Text Structures Stations
Students in Mr. Tepper's ELA classes came to the library for a class of Text Structure Stations. In small groups, students examined books and articles to determine the non-fiction text structure: cause & effect, problem & solution, descriptive, compare & contrast, and chronological.
Morning Student Time
Each morning, approximately twenty students come to the library before school to read, 3D print, use the MakerSpace, hang out with friends, and work on homework.

Our Library
The OMS library is open from 7:05-3:45 daily. Ms. Tremble and Ms. Sturdivant are excited to help students find books, 3D print, and use their technology. Maker Club meets before school in the library each day. Battle of the Books meets on Wednesday afternoons (3:15-4:00).
