Rockford Virtual Secondary Program

7th - 12th Grades

Independent Learning with Support

The Rockford Virtual Secondary Program provides students with the opportunity to learn independently. Though this is not ideal for every learner, some students benefit from the flexibility, independence and ability to work at at their own pace.

Application/Enrollment Process

Step 1 - Complete the virtual enrollment request through Skyward Family Access.

Step 2 - Complete the application with the student (plan for 20-30 minutes).

Step 3 - Work with school staff to create, revise and approve the student's Educational Development Plan.

Step 4 - Attend the required orientation session session on Monday, August 16 from 9-11 a.m.

Step 5 - School begins on August 23, 2021.

In-Person Requirements

Most work will be completed at a choice location, but students will report to a school building several times each year for:

  • Standardized testing (NWEA, M-STEP, PSAT/SAT, ACT WorkKeys) applicable by grade.
  • Proctored tests or exams as applicable by grade, course and teacher.
  • Depending on enrollment, in-person seminar or lab times may to accompany specific courses (max of 2, half-days per tri per course).

School Schedule

Students are encouraged to participate in learning during the same times as their in-person peers on scheduled school days so they have maximum access to teachers while engaged in school. However, students may choose to work on a staggered schedule as they have access to the learning materials all of the time. Regardless of when, students should plan to engage in at least 6.5 hours of school per day. As with traditional school, some courses will require additional time for homework and time required above the 6.5 hour school day will depend on the rigor of each course, the student's pace of work, etc.

Rockford Virtual uses the Apex Learning Platform to support our students in grades 7-12. Our curriculum includes math, English, science, social studies and limited elective options. Students may elect to take one or more courses at the home school building as well. Rockford Virtual courses include the same learning standards as RPS in-person core classes. Please use the links below to view a demo of Apex Learning and to see course options for 2021.22.

Language, Honors, Advanced Placement

RPS values the support of our teachers for Apex courses, therefore the RPS course catalog will not include all Apex courses. Please see below for additional details.

High School Language - High school students have the option to take Spanish through Apex. Other languages may be taken in-person at Rockford Freshman Center and/or Rockford High School.

Honors and Advanced Placement Courses - These courses will not be offered through Rockford Virtual in 2021.22. Students may take these courses in person at Rockford High School.
