Adding Captions to Videos
For Youtube and Google Drive
An important element of making our information ADA-compliant and accessible to all individuals includes using closed captions in videos to help individuals who can not hear understand the spoken and audible portion of the information being provided.
Below are two suggestions for how to provide closed captions for videos that you create and share with others.
You can upload your video either to Youtube or Google Drive.
But it is easier to get captions shown in Youtube than it is for a video in Google Drive.
YouTube has provided a way to AUTOMATICALLY create caption files from videos you have uploaded. Using this method means you do not have to type and upload the captions on your own.
*However, the quality of the captions is sometimes poor and you will probably need to edit the caption file manually.
This webpage provides a great overview of adding captions to your Youtube videos -- YouTube Captioning.
The first part of that webpage describes how you can type & upload your own captions, and the second part of the webpage describes how you can let Youtube setup the captions automatically.
Additional Information: Captions for Youtube Videos
Below are additional instructions to help you through the process of creating & uploading your captions for a Youtube video:
For automatic captioning:
- Use automatic captioning - YouTube Help
- Instructions for how to edit or remove any captions that haven't been properly automatically transcribed.
For adding your own captions:
- Add your own subtitles & closed captions - YouTube Help
- Supported subtitle and closed caption files - YouTube Help
- Manage caption settings - Computer - YouTube Help
Hint: If you are going to upload your own captions, many people find it easier to type the script BEFORE you make your video. This saves time and helps you stay on topic while making your video.
Adding Captions to a video in Google Drive
Unfortunately, Google Drive will not automatically transcribe & apply captions for your video. You will have to type & upload the captions transcript file on your own.
Remember: You must setup a Youtube channel before you upload videos to it.
NOTE: We recommend you use either your real name or your department name as the name for your Youtube channel.
