Haddonfield Students Impress NJ Judges in World Language Video Contest!

The results are in! Six talented Haddonfield students are honored by The Foreign Language Educators of New Jersey (FLENJ) for placing in the state’s foreign language speaking contest. FLENJ asked world language teachers in NJ to submit a one­ minute video of their students speaking in the foreign language to share the value and joy of learning a world language.


Elementary Category

Central Elementary School 2nd graders, Chloe Luci and Chase Degillio starred in a video under the production and direction of Mary Devine, elementary Spanish teacher. In the video, Chloe and Chase escape the cold weather in Haddonfield and travel to the enchanting island, Puerto Rico. Using Green Screen Technology and iMovie, the two second graders visit important sights in Puerto Rico such as El Morro and El Yunque and finish their trip with some salsa dancing! Two 4th grade students, Allie Brown and Joseph Poliafico, from J.F. Tatem Elementary worked with Luis Bayona, elementary Spanish teacher, to create a fast paced video about students running in the hallways because they are late to class! Middle School Category

Speaking in Spanish, Tyler Christensen and Anna Swartley , 7th graders at Haddonfield Middle School (Central School alum) played the leads in their video which was produced by Dana Pilla, HMS Spanish teacher. Using Green Screen Technology, viewers are transported to F.C. Barcelona’s soccer stadium in Spain to listen to an interview with Argentinian soccer star, Lionel Messi. BRAVO

All of the students and nominating teachers were honored at FLENJ’S Annual Conference on Saturday, February 28, 2015 in New Brunswick, NJ. Certificates were awarded to the students who starred in these winning videos. All of the winning videos are on FLENJ’s website: http://videocontest.flenj.org/ The students will also be recognized by the Board of Education during April 16, 2015 BOE meeting. The principals and nominating teachers are extremely proud of the students’ hard work and commitment to being a lifelong language learner!

Fitness Fiesta

Teacher: Señorita Devine

Did you know that your brain wants your body to move? It’s true! Since your brain prefers active learning, we will be learning Spanish while moving our bodies! Get ready to sing, dance, and exercise to some of our favorite songs, new and old! Some of the songs include Waka Waka, La Macarena, Danza Kuduro, Chu Chu Ua, etc. We will be stretching our bodies and making them stronger through dance and aerobic fun. Staying fit and being healthy is “fantástico!” During each class, you will learn about a different delicious fruit from a Spanishspeaking country. You may even get to try one of them. :) Grab your sneakers and a water bottle and get ready for a fitness “fiesta!” A yoga mat will be provided.

iMovie & The "Green Screen"

Teacher: Señor Bayona and Señorita Devine

Have you ever wanted to transport yourself to a different place? Well now you can with the use of a big GREEN SCREEN. You will get to film yourself in front of a green screen with lights just like in Hollywood! Then, using Mac laptops and the iMovie program, you will pick a background (ex: beach, baseball stadium, restaurant, etc.) and create an authentic-looking commercial! Come prepared to act, direct, film and produce!

Let's play Fútbol

Let’s learn some important vocabulary words and Spanish expressions while playing el fútbol with señor Bayona. During the class students will be able to acquire new vocabulary words, enhance their comprehension skills and get in shape while having fun playing fútbol soccer. Let's Learn Something New!

In this introductory class students will have the opportunity to acquire new vocabulary words. They will be able to produce language that is meaningful in real life situations. We will help our second language learners develop better communicative and comprehension skills in order to interact in and outside of the classroom. We will reinforce daily vocabulary by playing games, singing songs, presenting skits in front of the class and creating arts and crafts. Let's order food...en español!

Teacher: Senor Bayona

During this class students will be able to understand different concepts such as: How do Spanish speaking people order food in a restaurant? What are some of the adjectives or expressions Spanish speaking people use to describe food? How do they express likes or dislikes? What are the similarities and differences between meals we consume in the U.S and Latin America? Most importantly, students will acquire the necessary tools they need to produce meaningful language that can be use in real life situations. Depending upon enrollment, we will plan a visit to a local restaurant and will apply everything we will learn during class..
