MUHS Family Newsletter
April 20, 2023
Note from Principal Caitlin Steele
Dear MUHS Community,
Whether you are traveling or staying close to home, I hope this April break brings you a welcome change of pace - an opportunity to catch your breath, see something new, or check a few things off your list.
With VTCAP state assessments, IB exams, and SATs around the corner, our return to school will kick off testing season. If your family is feeling the stress, remember that studying matters, but it's also important to get good sleep, fuel our bodies with healthy food, and spend time with people who bring us joy. Mindfulness can help too. If you’re curious about mindfulness resources for students, here are a few meditation practices designed to support test taking. I would love to hear your thoughts if you try these or have practices of your own.
When we return on May 1st, students will be preparing for their Personal Project Exhibition, Junior Prom, and Spring Fling, along with sporting events and musical performances. I hope to see you at some of these wonderful student events as the weather brightens this spring.
Have a wonderful April break!
Caitlin

MUHS Day of Silence
Thank you to our MUHS SAGA group and their advisors Ben Long and Anna Hand for organizing the Day of Silence at MUHS to stand in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ students and youth who have been or continue to be bullied, harassed, and silenced for being who they are.
Quarter 3 Student Recognition!
Congratulations to Natalie, Margaret, Ethan, Diana, Shyanne, Lily, Alex, Cooper, and Mason who were nominated by their teachers and recognized at the Quarter 3 student breakfast for their contributions to our MUHS classrooms and community!
MUHS News & Updates
Mark your calendars: Grade 10 Personal Project Exhibition!
Members of the community will have an opportunity to attend our Grade 10 Personal Project Exhibition on Thursday, May 4 from 11:00-11:45 in the MUHS gym, when students will display and talk about their work. It is a drop-in event, so please come and see what the students have accomplished at any point from 11:00-11:45! The Grade 10 Personal Project is the capstone for the Middle Years Program. All Grade 10 students began work on their Personal Project early in the year in their advisories. They chose a topic they are passionate about -- something they wanted to spend time working on and learning more about. They set goals, planned and designed a product, and reflected on their process. Throughout the process, students conferenced with their advisors and worked on their projects and reflective reports. This exhibition is the culmination of our students’ experience and offers a wonderful opportunity for members of our community to find out what our 10th graders investigated, made and learned about.
Design & Illustration T-shirt Design (Voting ends Sunday!)
Lisa Rader’s Design & Illustration students at the Career Center have created designs for the Middlebury Festival on the Green since 2012. That tradition continues as the students created eight designs for Festival volunteers to consider, and they narrowed the field to three finalists. Community members have the ability to vote for their favorite. Voting closes at 11:59 PM on Sunday, April 23. Here is a preview of the designs:

DP Exams begin on Tuesday, May 2, 2023! We have 50 grade 12 students taking numerous exams in different subjects this year. These students registered as either full diploma candidates, at the beginning of their grade 11 year, or course certificate candidates this past fall. Everyone can view our exam schedule here. Also a reminder to all registered students, you can view your personal exam schedule on MB. The exam period runs from May 2nd to May 18th. Please contact the DP Coordinator, Cindy Atkins, if you have any questions.
State Testing Update
We changed the state testing schedule to allow several days between the 11th grade science tests and SATs. 11th graders will now take VTCAP on Monday morning. Students in grades 9 and 11 who have school-issued Chromebooks should bring these to school fully charged on Monday, May 1. Look for additional information by mail soon.
Students and parents can explore the new test format through the Student Readiness Tool and practice tests. We’re following the news and know that roll out of these new tests has not been smooth. We’ll take it in stride and do the best we can!
