Texting during the school day
Please help us keep our students focused on instruction at school by not texting during the school day. Focus at school for many is becoming increasingly challenging as we have parents texting to alert their child of transportation changes, address home/friend issues, or even asking them questions. Additionally, students are not following the school procedures and contacting parents instead of relying on school processes and adult relationships to take care of their situations/needs such as the concern of friend issues, not feeling well, someone saying unkind things to them, etc. While these things may be important, we need to address them in an appropriate manner that isn’t pulling focus away from the school day and engaging in texting.
If a student isn’t feeling well, he/she needs to utilize our clinic not email or text a parent. The nurse will communicate a need to the parent as necessary as she will be able to have direct contact with the child to assess what may be going on. This also allows us to be informed of and monitor situations here at school and access our certified nurse to assist with issues that might allow a student to receive assistance then remain at school. If the situation exists that a student needs to go home, the nurse will call to consult parents. If in doubt when a decision needs to be made, she will call parents as we recognize parents know their child best.
If conflict situations arise in the classroom, there are trusted adults that can assist. It might be hard to give up total control of situations during the day, but it is healthy for your child to have positive relationships with adults at school. Teachers, counselors, administrators, related arts teachers, and more are available to work through concerns that can assist a student to resolve an issue and be able to stay at school. When staff is made aware of situations, they are able to connect with a child to help sort out real feelings of anxiety, conflict, and more.
There have been many situations in which parents have dropped everything to come to school simply because texting has stopped between them and their child. While the reason was likely simple such as the child went to lunch/related arts or was requested to put away their iPad, parents have become concerned. We want to eliminate that need to be unnecessarily concerned when a situation such as this occurs and know that we will contact you if the need arises during the school day.
Our hope is that if you receive an email or text from your child during the school day (unless requested by a teacher) that you would encourage them to seek assistance from a teacher or trusted adult at FCI and discontinue texting. If something is happening at school that needs immediate attention, know that we will be in contact with you. If the school needs to be made aware of transportation changes or another situation with your child, please call the office (317-915-4220) by 2pm so that your child can be given a pass to let them know of any changes.
Take advantage of the time that you have while your child is at school to focus on work, volunteering, appointments, etc. and know that #WeGotThis! This also helps your child learn to make it through their day with the variety of assistance that is available at FCI and get their minds back on what he/she is doing in class! Thank you for partnering with us for the success of your child! ~Mrs. Day

5th GRADE PARENT NIGHT - CREATING POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS
Karyn Mitchel from Creating Positive Relationships (CPR) is hosting a Parent Seminar for FCI 5th grade parents on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at 6:30pm in the FCI cafeteria.
CPR curriculum is NOT taught in the 5th grade. Instead, the parent information session is offered to support conversations at home.
At the parent support meeting, strategies will be given to parents on how to begin conversations that help your child navigate the changes that occur physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially during puberty. While this evening is designed for 5th grade parents specifically, all parents are welcome.
ATTENTION ALL 6TH GRADE PARENTS:
ATTENTION ALL 6TH GRADE PARENTS:
Creating Positive Relationships (CPR) is a curriculum developed to build character in young people, empowering them to develop healthy relationships, benefitting their communities and society. The curriculum focuses on teaching students the basics of puberty and sexually transmitted infections (STI’s); personal relationships; physical, emotional, social and mental health; love vs. crush; and media/technology impact on relationships. This year, the Creating Positive Relationships curriculum will be taught by FCI’s physical education teachers to all 6th grade students during the PE rotation prior to spring break (March 11-26, 2020).
If you DO NOT wish for your child to participate in the CPR curriculum, please print, sign & return the exemption sheet (in the link below) to your child’s homeroom teacher.
If no written response is received prior to the start of CPR instruction, your child will participate in the Creating Positive Relationships curriculum. Should you have questions or concerns about CPR, please contact your child’s PE teacher for more information.

From The Nurse
Medication information
Please take a moment to review the District medication policy below. ALL medication (prescription, over the counter, and homeopathic; including cough drops) MUST be kept in the clinic and distributed/administered by the nurse. If you have specific questions or concerns, please call the school nurse during normal school hours.
From the HSE District website:
The health of your child can directly affect school performance. The School Nurse is one team member available to help your child achieve their best. By adhering to the following guidelines, medication can be safely administered at school. All medication must be sent to school in its’ original container. This container should be placed in a sealed envelope that is labeled with the student’s name, medication name and dosage, pill count, parent/guardian’s name and phone number. Medications will not be dispensed unless this policy is followed completely. It is the student’s responsibility to see that their medicine is taken at the appropriate time.
Short Term Prescription Medicine (to be given ten days or less) must be accompanied by the following:
1. A written note from the parent/guardian specifying dates, times and dosage to be given.
2. Medication must come in the original prescription container labeled with child’s name and instructions.
3. If it is an oral medication, send the exact amount of medication that will be used at school.
4. A written order from the physician if sample medication is provided.
Long Term Prescription Medication (given more than ten days) must be accompanied by the following:
1. A physician’s order on a prescription pad or their signature on the form below.
2. A written note from the parent/guardian specifying dates, times and dosage to be given or completion of the form below.
3. Medication must come in the original prescription container labeled with child’s name and instructions.
Non-Prescription Medication (cold medicine, cough syrup etc., to be supplied by parent and given ten days or less) must be accompanied by the following:
1. A written note from the parent/guardian specifying dates, times and dosage to be given.
2. Medication must come in the original container labeled with child’s name.
3. Please provide single doses only or the exact amount of medication that will be used at school.
Note: Medication may be sent home with a student if the parent gives written permission. However, to avoid having to transport medication back home with a student, please send in either a daily single dose or the exact amount required for the treatment period.Gently used clothing request
The clinic is in need of gently used boys athletic pants and girls leggings/athletic pants. If you have those items that your child has outgrown, please consider donating them to the FCI clinic. Mrs. Gump lends them to students who occasionally get wet/muddy at recess. The clinic is currently low on those specific items. Thank you!

Attention All 6th Grade Students & Parents
ATTENTION ALL 6th GRADE STUDENTS AND PARENTS!
The FCJH Band, Choir, and Orchestra Programs WANT YOU! You have an exciting opportunity to participate in band, choir, or orchestra next year at FCJH. Participants will learn how to read music and how to play an instrument or develop your abilities as a vocalist. Classes will meet every day at FCJH just like any other academic class. Every student at FCJH receives SOAR time (comparable to our current SLT time), even the students in a performance ensemble!!!!! Students who are not currently in band, choir, or orchestra have the opportunity to join at FCJH.
“Research shows that students who participate in musical ensembles at school have higher attendance rates and test scores. Even more, new studies show that making music with peers as part of the school day can lead to increased levels of empathy and can lead to making friends faster!”
All you need to do is put band, choir, or orchestra on your schedule as an elective! Students who are currently in band or orchestra simply need to write down band or orchestra to continue to participate next year!
Grab your friends and don’t miss out on all of the fun! COME BE IN THE PERFORMING ARTS!!
Students in the FCJH Band, Choir, and Orchestra take a trip to Kings Island at the end of the school year!
For questions or more information please contact Ms. Hamaker, Mr. Spidel, Ms. Yoder, or Mr. Wirtz!
