Online Learning Resources for Students and Parents

Mrs. Linebaugh
Hello, Hanawalt! I cannot begin to tell you how much I miss seeing you all.
We had a wonderful Easter holiday with our small family unit. It was Kora's first time coloring Easter eggs! Because of the rain, we had a wonderful egg hunt in our barn. It is amazing how many nooks and crannies eggs can be hidden in!
I have spent the majority of my days learning with Theo, Mitch and Kora. Our time together has been hilarious and full of fun adventures outside as well. We have been lucky to have so much space to explore outside. The Canadian geese are back and swimming away on the pond. We have been visited by a crane and even caught sight of a fox! Our newest adventure has been planning for our garden this summer. Mr. Linebaugh has been building raised garden beds and I am anxious to get planting! Mitch and Theo have taken over some of the cooking and so far, we are all still alive.
xoxo,
Mrs. Linebaugh

I hope all of our Hanawalt families are able to find “sunshine” in each of these recent days! Our family has a “plan” every day to do something that brings us joy. We find our sunshine in laughing, being silly, baking, cooking, organizing, playing board games, going for walks, crafts, and ZOOMing with friends and family, and doing a lot of relaxing while watching TV or reading. Our dogs are over the moon, with us being with them all day.
My daughter, Alaina, who is in 6th grade has Distance Learning each day. My husband and I are doing our work, while making sure she understands her work. So, weekends are definitely slated for fun!
I miss seeing our Hanawalt Family each day. It has been fun communicating with you in a much different way than we are used to. I have been talking and laughing with many of your teachers each day. All of us are working hard in this new way of teaching.
Mrs. Alberts
Hello Hanawalt Hawks! I miss you all so much!! I hope you all are staying healthy and safe! My dogs, Tucker and Oliver, really enjoy having me home all the time. They have made many appearances on our Special Ed team meetings. When the weather cooperates, I spend time outside on my hammock reading (sometimes the dogs even lay with me). When Adam (my husband), isn’t working we like to spend our time fishing, watching Disney movies or working on home projects. I miss you all and can’t wait until we can be back together again!
Mr. Nick Black
Hey Hanawalt families, I miss you all a bunch! I’ve been keeping busy at home by practicing piano, playing some video games, finishing my first year of my masters, house hunting and walking to my parents house which is only 3 miles away. We’ve been having some fun game nights and after four games I am still the king of Yahtzee and Monopoly. I’ve set some goals during this break of finishing Summer Metro programming, connecting a cartwheel to my back tuck and getting some songs under my belt to hopefully play next school year on piano. Who knows, maybe I’ll be able to do both by the end of this. I have loved hearing from some of you via teams, zoom and facetime, I can’t wait to get reconnected next year, miss you all!

First of all- I miss you all so much. I can’t wait until we are all back together. I am staying busy at home trying to learn all that I can about COVID-19 so that I am ready in the fall to take care of all of you. I meet with my fellow nurses a couple times a week, virtually, so we can share information and learn from each other. I tried making no-sew masks. They worked out pretty well and I wear them when I go to the store. I am staying in touch with my family here and in Colorado. I have also reconnected with cousins from all over the country. It has been wonderful to catch up with my extended family. I walk a lot. My dog, Nellie, will probably be very glad when I go back to school. I am exploring new authors and really enjoy having the time to read. I can’t wait for warmer weather so I can be out working in the yard. I hope you are all staying well. Wash your hands. Keep up with social distancing. We will be back together soon.

Hello Hanawalt Hawks!
I hope this day finds you happy and healthy. I miss you all so much and I can not wait to see your smiles, laughter and enthusiasm as we all come together again!
We are staying busy here at the “Big Red Barn House” and enjoying family time! Michael and Annie are still working out of the house. Zach is finishing his college semester doing online learning and Sophia is wrapping up her senior year at Roosevelt with distant learning. It is a busy place for sure! The dogs and cats are basking with attention and the dogs are enjoying the extra walks, upon walks, upon walks, which have been my only daily exercise regimen for now. Most evenings, Joe and I are binge watching Netflix series, while eating popcorn!
I have been busy with district expectations and online learning, but have also been able to read lots of books, both academic and for pleasure. My family and I have done several 550 piece puzzles and by doing so, I realized I do really well with the edge pieces, only! There is also a whole lot of cooking and kitchen activity in this house again and for some reason it feels all too familiar, or a blast from the past.
I picked up my old guitar, and have been strumming it a bit. With practice, I may even be ready to play some tunes for you! My yard is getting a little more attention this spring, as we have been enjoying the warm, sunny days working outside together. Now it’s time to begin planting my flowers and I am excited to watch them bloom. Spring reminds me of all you little Hawks growing and blossoming as you prepare for your next adventure. Keep working hard and growing your minds!
I hope you are all enjoying your family time, too, staying healthy and I look forward to seeing all our little Hawks and their families very soon.
I’m missing you every moment!
Take care and keep smiling!
Love Ms. Roth
Virtual Day in the Arts
Hanawalt has a long standing tradition of educating the ‘whole child’ recognizing that all areas of learning are of equal importance and children learn in a different ways. Normally, this week would’ve been our annual A Day In The Arts. Knowing that this learning experience is not isolated to this one day, but many hours of extended learning occurring prior to and after the Day in the Arts, we would like to offer some activates to keep exploring the arts.

Activities that aren’t online:
Have your students make a nature collage. Have them go outside and collect things that they can glue and layer on paper to make art.
Grab an old sock and some markers and have them make a sock puppet. This can become a drama project as well, when they use the puppet or a few puppets to create their own show.
Thumbprint art. Use any kind of paint you have tempera, watercolor, etc. Have your kids dip their thumbs in and then put their thumbs on paper to create art.
Have each child start with a piece of paper and start drawing. After one minute, say “switch” and have them pass their paper to someone else. They are not allowed to tell the other person what they were drawing. Go another minute and then switch again. This can go on for as long as you wish. Parents can also participate!
Make Nature stamps. Go outside and collect items. Paint the items and see what print they make on paper. Use this technique to make art.

Activities that aren’t online:
Put on a play. Utilize homemade puppets, stuffed animals or wear a costume you’ve made from what you have around the house. Think about what your character is like, how he/she speaks, and what he/she will experience. You can write a script or just plan out a general idea of how the story will go. Practice. Then perform for brother, sisters or parents.
Create your own dance. Teach it to someone in your house.
Create your own yoga poses from looking at things around you. Create the table pose or the windy tree pose and move your body like those things.
Make one word stories with your kids. One person in the house says a word like “once” the next person can say “upon” or they can say something totally different. Keep rotating who says a word next to build a story together.
If you have two kids or more (otherwise parents play too), be each other’s mirror. Take turns being the person who is looking into the mirror and the other person try to mirror all motions.
