Coming June 12th
LAF School Virtual Field Day
and
A Virtual Visit with the author of Grump
A Note from Liesl Shurtliff
Hello Lafayette Elementary!
I'm very much looking forward to our virtual visit on Friday, June 12th at 12:30pm (ET). I often meet with children in schools to promote literacy and share what it's like to be an author. It's always fun, engaging, and educational. In our current circumstances, it's not possible for me to visit schools in person, but I'm so glad we have technology that can help us connect and still give us the same educational value.
- Here is the Zoom Link for our visit.
- Meeting ID: 897 5249 3734
- Password: 908590
Helpful information about this virtual visit:
Upon entering the meeting, you will be muted and will stay muted during most of the meeting while I am presenting. Only the host or co-host can unmute you. This will help us so we don't accidentally have background noise and lots of distractions.
The meeting will proceed as follows:
Introduction:
As students are coming in during the first five-ish minutes, I'll say hello and ask the students a question or two and they can answer in the chat feature. I'll give some of their answers a shout out. After it looks like most students are in the meeting, I will turn off the chat feature, and a select group of students will give a brief introduction, and we'll get started!
Presentation (25-30 minutes):
Your students will learn about my writing process using my Time Castaways series as a model. Students do not have to have read this book to follow along. They'll learn how I gather ideas, research, draft, revise, and publish a book. We'll be using the poll feature in Zoom during this presentation. (Don't worry, it's easy.) The poll questions will pop up right on their screen. They just click an answer, then we'll all be able to see the results and learn from them!
Q&A (15-20 minutes):
At the end of the presentation, we will have Q&A in which I'll answer as many questions from the students as I can. Students can raise their hand either using their actual hand or using the "raise hand" feature under "Participants." I will then unmute one person at a time so you can ask me your question. I will do my best to answer as many questions as I can, though I may not get to everyone. *Please no recordings of our meeting.
I can't wait to see you all on Friday!
All the best,
Liesl Shurtliff
Teacher Gifts
Last week, I received a request for how to drop off personal gifts to the LAF teachers. Listed below are two ways that you can drop off gifts:
- During your scheduled time on June 10th or 11th. Please hand the teacher gift to the staff member assisting with the collection/drop off of student materials. Please make sure that the teacher's name is visible, legible, and securely attached to the package/envelope.
- On June 12th between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., I will be outside at the LAF Circle.
I have arranged a time for teachers to pick up the end of year gifts that were organized by the room parents, therefore, I am not able to make any accommodations to the plans that are noted above.

5th Grade Fun
As an optional end of the year 5th grade activity, take some time to write a letter to your future self. When you have completed the letter, place it in an envelope with your name on it and a stamp. Please leave room for an address. Then drop it off at LAF (there is a box by the front door) or place it in another envelope and mail it to LAF.
In June 2027, we will mail your letter back to you! Are you wondering where to start? What to write? Below are some prompts to get you started.
- Refer to today’s date and then imagine writing to your future self.
- What do you want to be doing when you are older beyond Chatham High School?
- What are the goals and dreams you want to realize by 2027?
- How did you manage working remotely from home during the COVID pandemic?
- Do you think this experience will have an effect on your future? How?
- What is something new that you want to learn right now?
- Draw a picture too!
The goal is to have fun and then in 7 years hear back from your 5th grade self. Please complete all letters and send to LAF School by June 30, 2020.
