Bellerose Bulletin
Issue 1 October
A Message From our Admin:
Welcome to October Bulldogs!
September has been filled with excitement and hope at Bellerose, and as October greets us with it’s crisp mornings and colorful trees, we look forward to another busy month of learning and activities. At the end of August when our Bellerose staff regathered after a summer of rest, we intentionally reflected upon the history, traditions, and vision of Bellerose. Coming back to school after a very complex year that involved many disruptions to how we could normally work and connect with our students and community, we needed time together to reflect, refocus, and reconnect. Bellerose has traditionally been, and continues to be, a school that prides itself on creating a learning culture where students have a strong sense of belonging and community. Therefore, not surprisingly, our staff indicated that a focus for our team this year will be reconnecting with students and fostering a school environment where everything we do is built on a solid foundation of positive relationships. Now more than ever before, we all need to know that there is somebody who notices us, cares for us, and has our backs; the tough work of learning is only possible after we feel safe and cared for. The staff at Bellerose is so excited to be back doing the work we love with your children. We will continue to create opportunities for students to discover their passions, ignite their love for learning, and contribute to their community. We look forward to a new school year with renewed hope and opportunities!

Student Activities:
September was a busy month in terms of school activities. We hosted the Terry Fox Welcome Back BBQ, Hardcore Adventure Race, and showed our support for Canadian First Nations Peoples during Orange Shirt Day. The school came together as a community and partook in a smudge. In addition the students and staff of Bellerose created an orange rock garden to pay our respects. We also had students participate in the Student Vote which allowed for them to get informed on the various political parties and vote for the candidate they liked the most.
In October we will celebrate last years highest achievers during our Awards Night and Honor's Assembly. Students can also look forward to the fun Halloween events that are planned for later in the month.

The IB Corner:
Hello, school community,
My name is Clayton Wowk; I have proudly been teaching at Bellerose for many years now. This year, along with teaching science, I am excited to assume the role of International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) Coordinator. I want to thank Mr. Clayton Beebe, our school's DP Coordinator for the last number of years, and the many dedicated others before him, who have laid the groundwork for an outstanding educational program. The mission of IB education is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Bellerose is all about people coming together to make the world a better place - I cannot think of a more natural fit between school (Bellerose) and organization (IB).
At Bellerose, the tremendous value of our IB program is a function of the work done by teachers and students. These two groups make the job of being a programme coordinator easy. It will be my honour to update you on their activities in this corner of the newsletter throughout the year.
Recently, we had our first of two general student meetings. In October, we will follow up with a parent meeting. The purpose of this parent meeting is to provide you with information about the aims of the programme; the benefits of an IB education; what is required of students to obtain an IB diploma or course certificate; inform you of new IB events and initiatives specific to Bellerose; outline our responsibility to you as an IB World School; and answer questions you might have about our IB program. This meeting is for parents of all grade 10, 11, and 12 students taking an IB course and will be conducted with Google Meet software on Wednesday, October 20 at 6:00 pm, after the conclusion of parent teacher interviews. Please email me at IBC@spschools.org for an invitation link. Keep an eye on our twitter account, @BCHSBulletin, and this space, for upcoming news throughout the year.
Kindly,
Clayton
