Galesburg Portrait Project
Thursday, March 31st
5-7pm
The Box (306 E Simmons St.)
On Thursday, March 31st, the Department of Art and Art History will be hosting a public event to celebrate and launch the Galesburg Portrait Project. For those unfamiliar with the project, it is the work of Knox Artist in Residence John Bakker, and consists of 310 box-like panels with hand-painted portraits of almost 400 Galesburg residents. The goal is to represent Galesburg as a complex, rich, and vibrant community of individuals with a shared sense of belonging. Over the next two years, it will travel to various locations around town before settling in a permanent home - still to be determined. Portraits and comments are uploaded daily at https://www.facebook.com/GalesburgPortraitProject/
Profound thanks to Blick Art Materials, for their support of the Artist in Residence program. Additional support is provided by the Galesburg Public Art Commission and Galesburg Downtown Council (among others to be identified later). This event is in collaboration with the Galesburg Community Foundation and the Heart and Soul project, and we thank them for their support.
