Week of 12/6/2021

Dear CST Family,

What a fantastic spirit week at CST this past week! Beginning with pajama day on Monday and finishing with school color day on Friday along with a pep assembly, our student body was in full form with spirit and energy. You can get a sense of our spirit HERE. As we are now two weeks from our winter break, a two week plus break from school, one can feel the sense of excitement building in the halls. Another way this excitement has manifested is in the amazing support of our "Pennies for Shoes" campaign for the Olathe Mayor's Children Fund. In just four days of this campaign (beginning this past Tuesday), CST is well into the hundreds of dollars raised for this important fund. Our WIN times are having a "friendly" competition to raise money against each other as they vie for the top prize in the building. We have teachers incentivizing within their own class for some added fun. While we're having fun with this, I'm also so proud of our school community for stepping up for this cause. This fund directly impacts local kids in need of the most basic of items. Keep it up, wildcats...let's knock it out of the park in support of our Olathe community!

Pennies WIN Class Competition!!!

Raising money for the Olathe Mayor's Children's Fund, our WIN classes are competing against each other for the top prize! Winning classes (top 3) will receive celebrations/prizes...our goal is for 100% participation among all students/WIN classes...we are well on our way! Each day on morning announcements the top 5 classes are read (in no particular order). In the past teachers and parents have even offered to match their child's WIN class for donations...the WIN class with the highest average per student wins! Last year CST raised more than all Olathe middle schools...let's do it again!

Most importantly, through all the fun, this money goes directly toward fulfilling needs for Olathe kids. From shoes and socks, to jackets and dental care, your generosity will make a difference to kids right here in Olathe. Awesome job so far but let's keep the foot on the pedal and support kids most in need right here in Olathe!

Donations Due by TUESDAY, 12/14 at 8:44AM (WIN Time)!!! (this time has been updated since originally sent out)

------------------------------------

Below is a message from Olathe Mayor John Bacon

Right now, Olathe's dedicated charities are hard at work, ensuring the basic needs of Olathe children are met. They are helping families put food on the table, keep a roof over their heads, even put clothes in their kid's closets. This work is made possible by your generous donations to the Olathe Mayor's Children's Fund.

As our community continues to grow, so does the need for these services. 28% of children in the Olathe School District qualify for free or reduced-price meals, and 350 are homeless. Every dollar you donate will make a difference in a child’s life.

$50 covers the costs of supplies for 10 dental visits.
$100 fills five backpacks to ensure a successful school year.
$500 puts a new pair of shoes on 16 children’s feet.
$1,000 supplies a warm winter coat for 25 kids.
$2,000 stocks a kitchen pantry for 16 families.
$5,000 means 13 families can stay in their homes for at least one more month.

The caring and compassionate hearts of this community have helped the Olathe Mayor’s Children’s Fund Board raise more than $1.65 million since 2007! Please join us as we embark on our 2021 Campaign and work to bring hope to even more Olathe children.

Thank you for being a part of our community, and for helping to better the lives of Olathe families!

~Mayor Bacon

Message from last week's WW

Beginning this Tuesday, 11/30, CST will kick off our campaign for the Olathe Mayor's Children's Fund...affectionately known as the "Pennies for Shoes" campaign. Money raised goes toward basic needs for Olathe kids...shoes, socks, coats, dental visits, etc. Last year, Chisholm Trail raised $1,107.94 (most in all Olathe Schools!) and we're hoping to top that number this year! We turn this into a friendly (most of the time) competition among our WIN classes. The 3 WIN classes with the most contributions will win prizes (Mr. Morrone is the current title holder from last school year). Last year this included pizza, ice cream, and/or drinks. In addition, if CST raises more money than the other Olathe middle schools, Assistant Superintendent of Middle Schools, Dr. Sarah Guerrero, has promised donuts for all CST students!

CST Spelling Bee CHAMPS!

Nice job to all our participants for the CST Spelling Bee this past Thursday! The final 5 were all 6th graders and representatives from all grades took part to move on to the district Spelling Bee on February 10th at Frontier Trail Middle School. See our winners below!

Boys Basketball Tryouts

Any boys interested in trying out for the 7th or 8th grade basketball teams there will be a meeting before school Tuesday, December 7th at 7:15am. Please bring your surface with you to this meeting. If you are not able to attend please see Coach Reed in room 304 to get the information you will be missing.

A school physical MUST be on file for boys to begin tryouts.

GBB Game Location UPDATE!

Due to scheduling issued, the 12/7 GBB game will now be played AT Oregon Trail at 3:30pm rather than a home game as originally scheduled.

Also, stay tuned for CITY TOURNAMENT INFORMATION!!! As soon as seeding is determined we'll have locations and times to share for our GBB city tournament. Go WILDCATS!!!

WIN Time Opportunities

As we close out the semester our WIN time has expanded to include students moving about to receive support from their teachers in other classrooms. Teachers will provide a student who has the need to come to their classroom to receive support or make up a quiz or test. In addition, WIN continues to be a time for literacy intervention and now will include math intervention (6th grade) and counselor small groups. This period, after 1st hour, continues with our 10 minutes of school-wide reading (silent or read-aloud) as well as student enrichment through a choice board filled with content-related activities covering all curriculum at CST.

Discussion about 21-22 BEGINS!

CST Expecation Review--FYI

Parents,

Over the past week CST admin met with all 7th and 8th graders (6th graders coming next week) to review general expectations while at school. This includes behavior in the halls, classroom, lunch, walking home, etc. We talked about interactions with students, adults, and substitute teachers and use of appropriate language at school. Much of this was a refresher from the start of the year talks during WIN. Feel free to talk with your child about these visits and reach out to your child's admin with questions.

WIN Time

Literacy intervention began this past week at CST and 6th grade math intervention is just around the corner! This is non-class time used to help develop identified skills in students. Conducted during WIN time, students receive instruction in a small group setting and will be re-assessed prior to Thanksgiving. See original WIN post below for more information...

(originally posted in September)

In the weeks ahead, we'll begin providing literacy intervention for students identified through our MAP testing and reading fluency assessments in the building. This intervention will be provided during our WIN class period (8:44-9:18) and students will work in groups of 5 or less with CST teachers. All students will still be eligible for the WIN prizes described above, but may spend WIN time with one of our building literacy interventionists (one of 13 CST teachers) while they receive literacy intervention targeting any of the identified literacy gaps. This intervention time is being utilized in our Olathe Schools and achieves the state literacy mandate.

In addition, beginning Monday, all CST students will begin to receive daily phonics lessons for the first 5 minutes of their science class. This, too, is part of a district wide effort to help close any gaps that may have occurred through any of our kids' schooling. Daily phonics lessons will be fulfilled by your child's social studies teacher beginning in January.

Parent Awareness: Current Trends and Influences

Social Media Influences

A nationwide trend has recently made its way into local schools. Unfortunately, CST has not been exempt from this trend, nor have the other Olathe middle schools and high schools. The trend has been credited to TikTok and involves vandalizing schools and posting the video evidence on the social media platform. This has resulted in various acts of vandalism in Olathe including broken bathroom stall doors, mirrors pulled down from walls, soap dispensers ripped from walls, trash cans turned upside down, etc. Some have been caught as a result of their posted video making rounds. Of course, these actions can result in both school and legal consequences. The first story below features Olathe North principal, Jason Herman, who was interviewed by the KC Star.

The other articles are informational, but recent, and deal more with the mental health impact social media can have. Even working in schools as an administrator, I was not aware of some of the information below. As more focus and attention is given to the mental health of our children, the various social media platforms and their influence on the developing teenage brain is an important part of the conversation. My hope is that the links below will provide awareness of current trends and more about outside influences on our kids. Even better if these promote discussion at home.

Awesome library announcements!!

Our CST library app has been fixed! Students may use the CST Library app (from Classlink) to access tutorials to get ebooks and audiobooks from Destiny and/or Axis360, browse book trailers and booktalks, use databases for school research, etc...

Also, bookfairs are returning!! Our fall bookfair will be the week of October 18th and the Spring bookfair will be the week of February 14th. Both of these weeks are the week after conferences and the fairs will be in the library. This year we will be using Scholastic Book Fairs. More details to come as we get closer...

Odds and Ends

6th Grade Devices

  • Surface Go devices will be checked out to 6th grade and new students on Monday, August 16th. Returning 7th and 8th grade students should still have their device checked out to them last school year.

Extra Curricular Activities

  • Students are encouraged to join CST activities! There is a strong link between school involvement and academic success. Cross Country practice begins on Tuesday, August 17 and is available to all students, 6th, 7th, and 8th. Physicals required to participate.

Water Bottles

  • All students will be provided a water bottle from CST. Students are encouraged to drink plenty of water during the day. Drinking fountains will also be available for those without a water bottle.

Backpacks

  • Students will be allowed to carry their backpacks this year to limit necessary locker trips. Students are encouraged to travel light and utilize their locker to help lighten the load.

Lockers

  • All students have been assigned a hall locker and are expected to keep jackets/coats/extra clothing in their locker.

CST Student Handbook

Two topics often asked about are cell phones and attire. The screenshots below are from the student handbook found on our website. We aim to promote a distraction-free learning environment as much as possible and we remind students that "Chisholm Trail is a school, not the pool". We want to promote a positive academic learning environment in the way we dress, speak, and behave. Teachers and admin will review a variety of topics with students as part of our beginning of year talks.
