Be Present
On Wednesday, October 24th GHS held an assembly featuring Javier Sanchez with Ohio’s Be Present Campaign. Throughout the state, the Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) promotes wellness and recovery for all citizens. OhioMHAS has implemented this statewide social marketing campaign focused on primary prevention of mental health issues among youth and young adults. The Be Present campaign educates and empowers peers, friends, classmates and siblings of at-risk youth to “step up” and provide needed support. It also makes youth more aware of and able to address their own emotional state. With their own cups “full,” they become more willing and able to step up and speak out in a supportive manner.
Many adolescents are struggling with trying to find their own way, exploring different parts of their identity, or figuring out what they want to do with the rest of their lives. They’re experiencing transitions from middle to high school to college, making discoveries about who they truly are or trying to find work and live on their own after leaving their familial home.
The goal of Be Present is to raise awareness about the struggles young people face and encourage and empower their peer group, close friends and siblings to take more responsibility for each other, especially for youth who are being bullied (in-person or online), struggling to overcome mental or emotional problems or other stressors, and those who are most at risk of harming themselves. The OhioMHAS Youth Advisory Board and teens from five counties across the state provided input to develop the campaign.
After the presentation on Wednesday, Javier met with a group of 20 GHS students to dive deeper into what “self care” looks like. Additionally, the students signed up to be a part of further training opportunities that will be occurring through the Be Present Campaign.

Seniors & NHS Students Looking for Community Service Hours
Any student who would like to earn service hours doing computer repairs can do so before or after school hours. For students who may not need hours, but have an interest in technology they would be able to do the same type of work during school hours, schedule permitting. This may be particularly helpful for those students considering a career in the technology industry.
If there are students interested please email Mr. Baker @: tdbaker@genoaschools.com

This week's career showcase is Northern Manufacturing located in Oak Harbor. Northern's business is primarily stainless steel fabrication, but they also fabricate aluminum and other steel products. Northern's engineers do a lot of 3D modeling. In addition, Northern's employees are proficient in pipe welding, laser cutting and welding, and robotics. With 140 total employees, Northern is a place where you're a name and not a number. Take a look at what Northern has to offer in the video below!
Junior Damyon Cruz Testing His Technology Skills
Julian Sanchez Talks About His Commitment To West Point
To get into West Point is a difficult process, and it starts with the application. The pictures and videos that were taken were part of the CFA (Candidate Fitness Assessment). The CFA is a test of strength, agility, speed and endurance. The test includes a basketball throw from knees, pull ups, shuttle run, sit ups, push ups, and a mile run. All of the tests have a minimum requirement that has to be met, and has to be all done consecutively under 30 minutes.
I have committed to wrestle for West Point and will be technically serving for a total of ten years, five at the academy and five serving on duty. Next year I will be attending the United States Military Preparatory Academy for a year and the other four at West Point. The Prep School is on the same post as West Point, and is to help prepare candidates for West Point.
During those four years at West Point academy the school year is sort of the same as any other college just modified with a military touch. The difference from other colleges is the military training you do, and most of that is done in the summer. At West Point you pick a branch in the army to go in after the academy and some of those are Aviation, Transport, and Infantry. Whatever branch you choose is what you’ll be training with in the summer.
I’m expecting West Point to be difficult and challenging, but also fun. A lot of people I have talked to have been to other countries to study abroad, which is pretty cool and something I’d like to experience. The branch I see myself enrolling in is Aviation. Soldiers in Aviation are the ones flying the helicopters, apaches, and chinooks. I think it’d be awesome to be the one to fly an Apache.
Go Army!

Quiz Bowl Update
This week's quiz bowl update brings a promising prospect to the final weeks of the season. The team scored phenomenally in Tuesday's game and has some impressive point totals to show for it. The team finished the night with a score of two wins and two losses. They managed to beat both Findlay and Rossford, but ultimately couldn’t cinch up the victories with BG and TSA. Team Captain Matthew Robinson finished the night with an impressive 59 points, cementing last Tuesday as his highest point scoring game in his quizbowl career. Emma Lau finished the night with 7 points. Aaron Lejeune finished the night with 0 points but provided essential moral support. Fischer Bertok finished the night with two points, Zack Buhrow with 10 points, Alayna Nowak with 2 points and Emma Gould with 2. The team focused heavily on communication and “educated” guessing. With the addition of immediately guessing on questions they don’t know, the team managed to prevent the other team from scoring 2 points per question, which ultimately proved beneficiary in their two victories.

From the Desk of Mr. Ohlemacher
Dear Comet Nation,
This week we were fortunate to spend time with Javier Sanchez, founder of Ohio’s Be Present campaign. As part of his presentation Javier shared his struggles as an adolescent and provided tips to help cope and manage stress. A few of Javier’s tips resonated with our students and staff.
Javier spoke to the ills of social media when used to compare our lives to the lives of others. He spoke to how it can make us feel inadequate when we compare our lives to that of celebrities. It made me thankful to not be a part of the social media world. That’s right, I currently have ZERO social media access. For those who are on social media I sincerely thank you for sharing the great things here at GHS. Personally, I’m better trying to do great things at GHS than publicizing the great things we do so your help is greatly appreciated! A great tip Javier mentioned was the need to disconnect/unplug from Social media. Coincidentally, we just discussed this concept at our administrative team meeting earlier in the week. I am guilty of peppering our staff at GHS with emails. I definitely fall into the category of someone who wants to make certain everyone knows what’s going on as a personal peeve of mine is when people saying “I didn’t know.” Regardless, I’ve decided I will no longer send any emails on Friday. It’s going to be my day to unplug for my own good, but importantly for the good of people I care about. I’ll respond to email as needed, but will not initiate. As a part of this promise I won’t add every Friday email to Monday’s email list.
Javier also shared some great ideas on how to cope with stress and anxiety. For my part, I’ll share the things which I do to help manage my stress and cope with my anxiety. I start everyday by working out. Do I love when my alarm goes off at 4am? No, not really, but I do feel great by 7am and thankful that I dragged myself out of bed. As a reminder to myself of how blessed I am, I write notes to people letting them know how much I appreciate them. Sometimes it a text to my family, a note in a lunchbox or a card at school. Finally, I CHOOSE to view life with a positive lens. I’ll be honest, 10% of my life is miserable! However, I REFUSE to spend more than 10% of my life worrying about those aspects and I refuse to bring anyone else’s day down with negativity. Instead I CHOOSE to try and spend 90% of my time reflecting on the 90% of my life which is amazing. In learning to cope with stress and anxiety I’ve also learned what triggers stress for me. Personally, I get the Sunday Night Blues at the thought of the weekend being over. It’s not that I don’t love coming to school everyday, but I really, really love Saturday and Sunday. It’s my time to sleep in, play golf, watch football, spend time with family, and take a nap in my sweatpants. The key is to determine what works for each individual. The link below includes a few ideas which may be of help. Please take time to speak among your children about stress they may be dealing with and suggestions about how to cope with those issues.
