Bond Construction Update

Our bond construction is well underway at the Innovation Center and Early Childhood Center and if you click on the tab below you can watch the construction progress at Meisner Road in real time. The first phase of the bond projects which included the stadium updates, the new access road from King and the back parking lot resurfacing is almost complete. Next in the project timeline is the construction of the Innovation Center and the Early Childhood Center along with the parking lot resurfacing for the front lots closest to Meisner Road. The tentative completion date for these projects is the summer of 2022, keeping in mind that supply chain interruptions are causing various delays on all of our projects.

The other project that is in the design and development phase is the Marine City Campus. This project will be renovating the existing Marine City Middle School and High School to function as a single 6th through 12th grade campus. The Marine City campus site planning includes, as outlined in the bond, the demolition of part of the current middle school as well as improvements to the MC tennis courts and moving the current JV baseball field. The tentative timeline to start work on the MC campus building project is the summer of 2022. The MC tennis court work was pulled ahead as AUCH construction was able to complete this project.

The construction of the competition gym at the St. Clair 6th grade through 12th grade campus project has been delayed due to supply chain shortages with the new tentative timeline beginning this work in the spring/summer of 2022. The continuation of the St. Clair Campus design and development will begin later this year.

The elementary projects will be in phase 2 of the bond construction and the expectation is that they will start design and development once the Innovation Center and Early Childhood Center, the MC 6-12 campus and the SC 6-12 campus projects are underway and closer to completion.

Over the Christmas holiday break each of our schools will have a pilot classroom installed that will include furniture, updated lighting and technology. The purpose of each of these pilot rooms is for us to see the possible furniture options before making large scale furniture purchases for each school as well as technology placement in the classrooms.

In addition to the new construction, furniture, lighting and technology, the bond has provided the district with the ability to repair critical roof and mechanical system needs without an impact to our operating costs.

We have a lot of exciting opportunities to look forward to as we continue to upgrade our schools and technology.

Mental Health Challenges, Finding Solutions in our Schools

Ms. Lindsay Grange, Director of Special Education Services and Mr. Michael Walling, Curriculum Coordinator presented to the Board of Education East China School District's plan to address the many challenges that face students and staff. In an effort to increase the support that we are able to provide to our students, the district has increased our social work staff, introduced curriculum initiatives to promote well being, and has provided additional staff training and awareness. Each of these key pieces is critical to our effort of reaching all students in our district and continuing to make the East China School District a great place to learn and work.

In total the district has 9 Social Workers that are able to provide services to our students throughout the district. These staff members work with students to provide: social, emotional, behavioral, and well-being support and services. Below are those essential members of our team and the building they work in:

-Rebekah Alexander: St. Clair High School

-Christopher Aniel: Belle River Elementary School

-Katelyne Click: Gearing Elementary School

-Devon France: Riverview East High School

-Jacquelyn Franklin: Pine River Elementary School

-Maura McCarten: Marine City High School

-Stephanie Neiman: St. Clair Middle School

-Kellie Parkinson: Marine City Campus

-Michele Prainito: Palms Elementary School, St. Clair Middle School

From a curriculum standpoint, there are four components that the district has built in for the 21-22 school year and beyond in order to promote mental well-being. We have partnered with St. Clair County Community Mental Health for training opportunities for staff and they have also provided us support in terms of critical resources for our counseling and social work staff. Calm Classroom is a program that all students, up to 8th grade, will be exposed to throughout their day. This is a research based program that teaches students calming techniques in order to reduce stress and anxiety, improve behavior, and boost engagement. TRAILS, available for students in grade 6-12, is a research based program out of the University of Michigan that promotes resiliency, builds self-regulation skills in students, and introduces self-care strategies in order to relieve stress. Finally, the Positivity Project, which has been in place for a few years, teaches student character strengths and positive relationship building skills. Each of these curriculum components has been implemented with at least the initial round of training, with additional opportunities for reinforcement to occur later on in the school year.

SCMS Counselor’s Corner

St. Clair Middle School Counselor, Mrs. Sandy Rutledge, has created an interactive “Counselor’s Corner” for all students and parents. This Counselor Corner interactive page has a ton of resources. By simply clicking the icons on the slides, there are resources for students and parents with a variety of interests and needs. This is a great example of one way the staff at SCMS are consistently coming up with ideas on how to address social & emotional needs of our students and community. Anyone can access the “Counselor’s Corner” interactive page at any time by simply CLICKING HERE.
