Port Susan Middle School
Student & Family Update 02.07.21
Good Morning!
In next week's communication, we will have a map of the school along with signage and a video that will show you around. This will definitely help our incoming 6th grade students as well as new students. We are currently working hard to put this together!
Counselor Appreciation Week
Club Opportunities/Sports Updates
In addition to clubs, we know that many have asked about middle school sports. At this time, our league has decided to not have middle school sport competitions/games. However, we would like to provide sports conditioning and activities for our student athletes. Crysty Auckland, our athletic director, has reached out to our spring coaches to get a sports conditioning program in place. Once we have more information and all safety precautions are considered, we will reach out with additional information and sign up opportunities.

We would like this survey to be completed by Tuesday, February 9th if at all possible. Let us know if you have any questions.
Screening Procedure
Students that arrive via bus
Students must have a mask on properly to enter the bus. If a student does not have a mask, the bus driver will provide one.
Screeners will board the bus on arrival. Temperature will be taken for each student. At the secondary level, the screener will confirm negative answers to the attestation questions with each student.
If all students are asymptomatic, screener leaves the bus, students may all disembark, remaining 6 feet apart.
Students that arrive via private vehicle
Students in vehicles will be screened as the car pulls up to the curb. Students will be instructed to unbuckle if need be and move to the curb side of the car to minimize screeners in the drive-through.
Students will be screened via open window (or door if needed for vans)
Students walking onto campus
Students that walk onto campus will be screened at the main entrance.
Temperature will be taken for each student. At the secondary level, the screener will confirm a negative answer to the attestation questions with each student.
ALL Students
If a student has a temperature greater than or equal to 100.4 or answers affirmatively to any of the questions, the affected student will be removed to isolation area and the entire population will be evacuated to wait, socially-distanced in a designated area (cafeteria), for the school nurse to place a call to the Department of Health to determine need for quarantine.
If a student has a temperature of 100.0-100.3 degrees, the screener should radio in to the school nurse, health room assistant, or administrator for further instruction.

Classroom Arrival
Teachers will be ready to accept students @ 7:10 a.m. - doors open and supervising. Once students have been seated, they will be encouraged to open their chromebooks to begin working on assigned tasks from google classroom (this is a great use of their time).
Morning Announcements
We will continue to use our live google meet link for morning announcements and adjust the time to be at 7:40 a.m.
On day 1, we will use this time to go over onsite procedures - walking through the hallways, restroom use, transition to classes, wearing masks, washing hands, using sanitizer, left side of desk/right side of desk seating, etc.
Transition
We are going to go without bells during this time. An announcement will be made that it is time to transition to their next class. We will begin 3 minutes prior to the end of the period releasing students to teachers that have planning the period prior (this will cut down traffic in the hallway). After we can see they have all gotten to the correct classroom by use of our hallway cameras, we will release the remaining students to their next class. A reminder to walk on the right side of the hallway, not stop at the restroom, and make their way directly to their next class will be given. Once that is done, you can dismiss your class and wait for the next group to arrive.
End of the Day
We will begin by releasing all parent pick up and walking students. They will need to remain socially distance by the flagpole (we will have cones to help with this). After that time, we will release all other students to their bus lines. We will have designated cones with labels for each bus route. Students will line up on cones to remain a good distance away from one another as they wait for their bus.
Classroom Expectations
Student Arrangement/Desk Set Up
All classrooms will have a left/right designated area for seating (Pictured Below). Periods 1, 3, & 5 will be on the left and periods 2, 4, & 6 will be on the right side of the desk/table. All student desks/tables will be 6 feet apart as well as the teacher station located in the front of the classroom. Ideas for student support during class time: have a designated spot near the board where students can come up to for help, use a google meet within the classroom to have students share their screen to with teacher, have an open google doc for students to ask questions &/or assist one another in their thinking, etc.
Restroom Use
All classrooms will have a sign on a PVC pole for a bathroom pass. Students will use hand sanitizer, then grab the pass (1 per room only) to use the restroom. *No sign out sheets and students will be asked not to use the restroom during transition times.
The restroom will be open to 1 student at a time. They will place the PVC pole in a cone at the entrance that states “Restroom in use”. If that is there, they need to remain in the hallway 6 feet social distancing until the student exits. When going back into the classroom, the pass will go by the sink and students will wash their hands and apply sanitizer upon returning.
Storage of Student Supplies
All items brought from home should be kept at the student desk throughout the class period. No use of lockers or cubbies. All students will have chromebook available for checkout to bring to and from home. We will encourage students to use a school issued chromebook to prevent any possible damage of their own personal device.
Use of Shared Supplies in Classrooms
If student supplies are provided, they will be placed in an area labeled “need to be sanitized” or “dirty” so they can be properly sanitized prior to any other student needing them. For general supplies (pencils/paper/etc), we will provide these from our office and/or get supplies from our cabinet for students to keep. Chromebooks borrowed will need to be wiped down by the student prior to leaving the classroom. All other shared items can be wiped down with 75% alcohol wipes or sprayed with Alpha PH spray between classes.
Health Related Items
Student not feeling well/accessing health room
Signage will be located in the main foyer area and by the copy room door to lead students through that entrance if they are symptomatic. We have 2 health room spaces (one for symptomatic students and one for other health concerns *medication, cuts/bruises, diabetics, etc). If a student is not feeling well, please call down to the office to radio an administrator to meet the student by correct entrance. If a student needs medication or a routine trip to the health room, send them to the main office door. Because students are in their own space, there is not need to evacuate the classroom. Proper sanitizing will be done daily.
Mask Breaks
If a teacher would like to give students a break, they will call the office to let them know they will be going outside, then take students to the nearest exit while maintaining social distancing. Once outside, if students need a mask break, they need to go to their own space to do so. If one student decides he/she needs a break while in class, teachers will call the office and we will supervise the student while they are outside for the mask break needed. Because of the short time at school, these breaks will be limited to 5-10 minutes.
Staff &/or Student Illness
Return to school information for staff & students
Students &/or Staff that are symptomatic will be given the protocol below for safe return to school. Staff need to not report to work &/or leave immediately with an email &/or phone call to principal directly if experiencing any symptoms.
Students that are sent to the health room &/or call in will be documented through a google form. Access will be given to the school nurse, HRA, secretaries, and administration. From the date of symptoms, they will be “excused” on attendance for 10 days. IF a test results come back positive, all students as well as staff in that classroom may be quarantined for up to 14 days. Further direction from Snohomish County Health Department will be provided in all cases.
