Homeroom Buzz - Spring is here!

What's Happening in Room 220? May 1st Edition

What is all the BUZZ about?

Beginning next Monday, May 4th I will be sending home a Social Studies review log. This log will go from May 4th-May11th. Each night during the week students will need to study the Social Studies review guides as well as their interactive notebook for a minimum of 15 minutes per night, record which information they reviewed, and have an adult sign it. We will be reviewing in class, but this will help students to review material covered in 4th grade, as well as the beginning of 5th grade in order to prepare for their end of year Social Studies SOL test. This study log will also count as part of their 4th quarter Social Studies grade.

Beginning Tuesday, May 12th I will be sending home a Science review log. This log will go from May 12th-May 18th. Each night during the week students will need to study the Science review guides as well as their interactive notebook for a minimum of 15 minutes per night, record which information they reviewed, and have an adult sign it. Thank you so much for supporting this review at home!

Science & Social Studies

Last Friday we finished up our last Social Studies unit. The students enjoyed learning about the branches of the Virginia state government, products & industries of the five regions, and current Indian tribes recognized by the state of Virginia. The students also enjoyed creating Animoto infomercials that highlighted their region of Virginia. Be sure to ask them all about it!

To help prepare for the upcoming Social Studies and Science SOL tests students should visit: www.solpass.org. Once on this site to log in choose Brownsville Elementary from the school drop down menu and the password is: bessol

Once logged in students should choose Elementary School and complete the review activities in the Virginia Studies and/or Science grades 4-5. Hopefully the students will enjoy the fun interactive games! If you have any problems logging in please feel free to let me know.

Since we have covered all of the 5th grade Science and Social Studies units we will begin using our content time to work on end of year projects, review 4th grade Social Studies and 4th grade Science. During the Social Studies and Science rotations students will spend one content block with each of the 5th grade teachers to review various topics. Here is a schedule of what our content block (12:00-1:00) will be used for over the next few weeks:

April 27th-May 1st: End of Year "Momma, Where Are You From?" poems

May 4th-May11th: Social Studies Review Rotations

May 12th-May 18th: Science Review Rotations

Reading

READING: We are finishing up our realistic fiction novels and we will be moving on to a Poetry unit. Also in reading, we have been learning about figurative language and how it is used in poetry and other types of writing. Next week, will begin an in class project where they create a poetry anthology on a topic of their choice. During this project students will find rhymed/patterned poems and free verse poems on their topic. They will be asked to reflect on the meaning and/or theme of the poem as well as identify types of figurate language like: similes, metaphors, hyperboles, alliteration, personification, etc. The students will then write poems about their chosen topic. During this project reading groups will be meeting to reflect on their progress on the projects and to share their challenges and successes. Be sure to ask your child about the examples of figurative language we have been reviewing in class!
