January Principal Post
Dear Dena'ina Families,
Happy New Year! I hope you were able to enjoy some quality time with your loved ones during the winter break. It was exciting to see so many smiling and happy faces on Monday. This week they are quickly settling back into the routine of school and continuing on with their learning.
Near the end of January, the school district's Federal Programs department will determine if our school is eligible for Title I funding next year. Title I supports programs in schools and school districts to improve the learning of children from low-income families. The purpose of Title I is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education.
Many of our elementary schools qualify for Title I funds, which help provide staffing, before and after school activities, tutoring, professional development and family involvement activities. In order for Dena'ina to qualify, WE NEED YOUR HELP!
If you haven't already, please click here to fill out a lunch application, or click here to visit our Migrant Ed page. Many families that think they might not qualify for free or reduced lunches or Migrant Ed services actually do. The lunch program is income dependent, but the Migrant Ed program is not. If you do qualify, it does not mean your child must have the lunch or participate in Migrant Ed; but Title I funding is based on the percentage of children in our school who simply qualify.
We did not have Title I funds this year because we had to establish our population and school community, therefore, we weren't able to offer as much as we hope to in the future. Please help us out and check out the lunch or Migrant Ed as soon as possible!
If you have questions about Title I, or anything at all, please contact me. I have appreciated the parents who come in with questions, concerns or compliments - we can only get better if we do it together!

Frequently Asked Questions
What kinds of activities will be available the rest of this year?
Battle of the Books, band and choir are currently running right now. Soon students will be able to sign up for Art Club, Volleyball and Track & Field. Another round of archery lessons and Early Morning Movers is forthcoming. We are currently trying to set up Lego Robotics as well. Next year, with Title I funds, we hope to offer Science and Math Olympiad and some monthly family activities. If you would like to volunteer for before or after school activities or have a skill set that you would be willing to share with us, please let us know!
Kagan Structure for January: Rally Coach
Our Kagan Structure this month is Rally Coach.
Rally Coach teaches kids how to work together to solve a problem and/or use coaching skills to help someone without giving the answer. Instead of just telling the student the answer, they learn words and phrases that allow the student working through the problem to solve it themselves.

Healthy bodies at Dena'ina Elementary
Don't forget about the Family Fitness Frenzy Challenge developed just for Dena’ina Elementary. If our Dena’ina families are active for 60 minutes a day, for 10 days out of the month (at least 1 parent, 1 Dena’ina student, & 1 sibling if possible, but of course the more the merrier!) then your family is entered into a drawing the first week in March for a slew of prizes like 3 Bears & Skinny Raven gift certificates, 4 pack of Alyeska Lift passes, and more! There are two more months left so don’t wait! Just have your Dena’ina student bring the completed calender with 10 days filled out stating what your family did and turn it into the Front Office or the gym. Copies of the Dena’ina Fitness Frenzy are available in the gym, in the Front Office, and online at our school’s website under Mr. Stewart’s teaching page! For more information, you can email Christopher.stewart@matsuk12.us or call 864-5605 and leave a message.
