- KFCS Board of Education
The Klamath Falls City School District will join the other 196 school districts throughout
Oregon to celebrate January as “School Board Recognition Month.”
Our school board members spend countless hours of unpaid time working to provide the
best possible education for our students. They also serve as the corporate board of directors for
one of our community’s largest employers. Celebrating School Board Recognition Month is one
way to say thanks for all they do.
School board members represent their fellow citizens’ views and priorities in the complex
enterprise of maintaining and running the community’s public schools. They also reinforce the
principle of local control over public education, which is an important, highly valued aspect of
education in Oregon.
Too often the efforts of school board members go unrecognized.
The school board’s main goal, is to support student achievement. To achieve that goal,
the board focuses on the following needs:
- Creating a vision for what parents and citizens want their school district to become and how to make student achievement the top priority
- Setting standards for what students must learn and be able to do
- Assessing whether schools achieve their goals, and whether students are learning
- Accounting for the outcomes of decisions and by tracking progress and reporting results
- Aligning the use of the district’s human and financial resources
- Creating a safe and orderly climate where students can learn and teachers can teach
- Collaborating to solve common problems and to support common successes
- Focusing on continuous improvement by questioning, examining, revising, refining and revisiting issues related to student achievement
Even though we are making a special effort during January to show appreciation for our
school board members, we recognize their contributions reflect a year-round effort on their part.
They are dedicated individuals who are committed to improving student achievement and to
fighting for the best for all of our students.
Please join me this month in thanking our Klamath Falls City School Board members; Vanessa Bennett, Patrick Fenner, Kathy Hewitt, Trina Perez, Lori Theros, Carol Usher and Ashley Wendt-Lusich for serving on the KFCS School Board.

Klamath Union Key Club Goes Above and Beyond
Klamath Union High School’s Key Club was mighty busy during the holiday heading into and during the Christmas break.
KU Key Club Coordinator Lisa Danskin knew her students were up for the task of helping their school and community. Here is a list of what they were able to accomplish.
- The Key Club signed 280 Christmas cards for Crystal Terrace residents, "Be a Santa" sponsors and students and Klamath Family Warming Center.
- Dropped off $350 worth of food and $50 worth of winter wear (beanies, scarfs, gloves, socks and blankets) to Klamath Family Warming Center.
- Delivered 710 candy canes to everyone at KU for the third year.
- Hosted 3rd Annual "Selfie with Santa."
- Spent time at Crystal Terrace during their Family Holiday Dinner and handed out our Christmas cards and candy canes.
- Hosted 3rd Annual "Be a Santa to a Student." Delivered $1,100 worth of Christmas presents to 19 students and their siblings.
The Klamath Family Warming Center is a nonprofit volunteer based warming shelter located at Thrive Church, which is located at 235 S. Laguna Street. Their doors opened December 1 and will remain open until March 15th. Hours of operation are from 7 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. for a warm meal, a shower and a warm place to stay. They serve anywhere from 25 to 30 people a night. Volunteers and donations are always welcomed.
Quotes from Santa sponsors
"I love being able to help these kids."
"There is no way I could ever thank you for everything you do for these students and our community!"
"I think you are Santa!"
"KU is very fortunate to have a Key Club like yours."
"Your students are angels."
Quotes from Santa students
"I am so excited that I don't know how to act."
"No one has ever done this for me before."
"Are those all for us?!?"
Kids yelling from the front door as Key Club drives away, saying "thank you, thank you, thank you!"
Quotes from Santa students’ guardians
"You have no idea how much this helps!"
"These are the only presents my kids will get this year, thank you!"
“We touched a lot of lives this week. Key Club has put a lot of hard work and care into these projects the last couple of weeks,” Danskin said. “It was very heart-warming to see in my students’ eyes just how much of an impact they made by giving a little of their time and concern to others this holiday.”

KU, Pondo Holiday Performances, Roosevelt Caroling
Klamath Union's music department put on a great performance during its winter concert last month. KU orchestra instructor Brent Hakanson also brought members of his orchestra's to play at the KFCS District Office.
If you missed the Ponderosa Middle School Winter Orchestra & Choir Concert, here is a video of the full performance. Great job to all our musicians at Pondo!
Students, parents and teachers at Roosevelt Elementary School took a stroll through Pacific Terrace caroling. Click below for a video of their time.
KU Thank You T-Shirts
KFCS Human Resources Administrative Assistant, Robin Sundseth
KFCS Director of Maintenance, Jared Thompson
Dan Stearns and Klamath Union Digital Media have come up with a clever way to thank our many employees at Klamath Falls City Schools.
The graphic design class at KU came up with a design on a t-shirt to say "thank you" to our KFCS staff and all the hard work done at the district.
The second hand out of "thank you" t-shirts are for Human Resources Administrative Assistant, Robin Sundseth and Director of Maintenance, Jared Thompson.
