Principal Letter
I am so excited about school year 2016-2017 at Finger Lake Elementary!
- We are adding two additional district-wide classrooms (a second Talented & Gifted program and an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) program)
- We will have four new teachers joining the Falcon Family
- Operations and Maintenance and the IT departments are working tirelessly to spruce up our parking lots, ensure work orders are completed, and update technology.
- Finger Lake is getting new carpet in our classrooms! Thank your child's teacher for the extraordinary jobs they did prior to leaving to prep their space for the workers. Thank the Mat-Su Borough for their support of our schools!
During the 2015-2016 school year:
- Our student enrollment increased by 75 students
- We began offering open gym, library, or computer lab for students in the morning
- We began flexible grouping and skills blocking school-wide 1st -5th grades
- We started the FLE News, initiated blue Falcon Fridays, quarterly assemblies/pep rallies, and implemented a student crew for “flag duty” to build unity and community
- We purchased Accelerated Reader and added several before/after school extended learning opportunities
- We strive to ensure a warm and welcoming atmosphere paying special attention to aesthetics and updating space inside and outside the building as we go.
- We have worked at promoting fun, engaging, and entertaining events such as the PTA Fall Festival, BINGO for Books event, our first annual FLE Kids Marathon, and more!
We are looking forward to continuing these amazing offerings for our students and families next year! As always, please let us know what we can do for you.

Summer Engineering Academies
The UAA Summer Engineering Academies offer a series of week-long sessions in Robotics, Structural Destruction, Alternative Energy, Wing Aerodynamics, Advanced Structures, Breaking Buildings and Creative Coding. These hands-on instructional sessions are for students entering grades 5 through 12 in Anchorage and Mat-Su. Each academy is designed to encourage interest and provide exposure to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). For more information on this great local opportunity, visit:
https://www.uaa.alaska.edu/collegeofengineering/summeracademies.cfm.
Drop Off Procedures
Pull to the front cone to allow 4-5 cars to unload at once. There should be no cars parked parallel to the sidewalk or left unsupervised in the drop off/pick up area. If you do need to park and walk your child in, please park in the lower lot.
Please remember the bus loop is for buses only during student drop off/pickup times. Our school’s leadership team, the PULSE team (Peers United to Listen and Solve Effectively), will be monitoring our school's procedures to ensure safe, effective, and successful plans are in place.
Pick-up Procedures
Who: All Car Riders
What: Options for Pick-Up
When: Began May 9, 2016
Why: Safety and Customer Service
Details:
- Students that are pick up go to the gym to line up.
- Parents have the option to stay in their car, drive up in the same line that drop off occurs, and adults outside will radio inside for students to be sent out.
- Those students will load, leave, and another 6 – 8 cars will pull up for pick up. During the spring trial run, all cars were loaded and launched anywhere from 3:55-4:00.
- Parents will still have the option of parking in the lower parking lot (back parking lot and drop/off/pick up loop will be off limits for parking), walk in front doors, and pick up their child(ren) in the gym.
- Parents/adults picking up children must be on the pick-up list or have made prior arrangements through the front office.

Early Morning Routines
FLE has three supervised areas in the morning from 8:30-9:00: Computer Lab, Gym, and Library
Students choose a ticket (first come, first served) at the door for their morning assignment. Doors will be unlocked at 8:30 am. Each room has a maximum capacity to safely accommodate early morning arrivals. All students must be in a supervised location during operating hours. Thank you for sharing your students with us and supporting us to ensure safety as our priority.

School Report Cards to the Public
As a requirement of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, states and school districts must issue annual report cards to parents. The purpose of the report card is to provide parents with information about the district and their child’s school in terms of teacher qualifications, academic achievement, and school/district accountability. To access the report cards, visit our website and select School Report Card to the Public at http://www.matsuk12.us/Page/25946. If you would like a hard copy of our school’s report card printed, please contact: Mrs. Smith, Title 1 Coordinator or Mrs. Farris, Instructional Coach.

Head Lice
Tips for minimizing the spread of lice:
- Check your student's hair every week
- Encourage your student to avoid sharing personal items such as combs, brushes, hats, coats, hair ties, etc.
- Encourage your student to zip up extra clothes in their backpack when not being worn.
