Parent Teacher Conferences
I've very excited to meet with you next week for your child's PORTFOLIO PRESENTATION.
This "portfolio presentation" is NOT a traditional parent/teacher conference. Your child will lead the first part of the conference to present his or her accomplishments and goals. After your child’s presentation, parents and teachers may use the remaining time to discuss strengths, concerns, issues, and academics. This format provides an opportunity for your child to…
- Share samples of work
- Learn self-evaluation
- Be accountable for his/her work
- Communicate with you about his/her progress and goals.

What Are We Learning?
Reading
All students are reading a historical fiction book. They are in book clubs, where students are able to discuss the text on a deeper level. We will be discussing how a books theme is important to understanding a story more deeply.
Our current read aloud is called The False Prince by Jennifer Nielsen. Students cannot get enough of this book! Here is a summary:
"In a discontent kingdom, civil war is brewing. To unify the divided people, Conner, a nobleman of the court, devises a cunning plan to find an impersonator of the king's long-lost son and install him as a puppet prince. Four orphans are recruited to compete for the role, including a defiant boy named Sage. Sage knows that Conner's motives are more than questionable, yet his life balances on a sword's point -- he must be chosen to play the prince or he will certainly be killed. But Sage's rivals have their own agendas as well.
An extraordinary adventure filled with danger and action, lies and deadly truths that will have readers clinging to the edge of their seats."
Writing
STUDENTS ARE VERY BUSY WITH MANY WRITING EXPERIENCES THESE DAYS!!!
Starting this week, students are going to start a research project where they will be researching one of the BIOMES (ecosystems) of the earth. (Tundra, Taiga, Tropical Rainforest, Temperate Rainforest, Desert, Grasslands, etc.) Not only will students be working on their nonfiction writing skills, they will also be learning about how ecosystems, food webs work in our Earth's biome regions.
Math
Our current math unit focuses on place value, powers of 10, exponents and decimals. Students will be able:
- Recognize that a multi-digit number in one place represent 10 times as much as the digit to the right. EXAMPLE: In the number 45,268, the two is in the hundreds place and has a value of 200. ASK: How is the value of 6 different in 496 and 9.64?
- Explain patterns when multiplying a number by 10, 100, 1000, etc. EXAMPLE: 24x10=240, 24x100=2400, 24x1000=24,000...ASK: Why does the product of 5 x 80 have two zeros?
- Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths. EXAMPLE: 2.4 > 2.39. ASK: Explain why 3.14 is larger than 3.014?
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths. ASK: 4.6 - 3.19 = ? or 4.35 x 7.3 = ?
Science
- Light are forms of energy that perform in predictable ways (absorbed, reflection, refraction, transmission).
- Light cannot pass through, shadows are formed.
- Light can be absorbed, which causes them to warm.
- An objects temperature increases depending on the material, the intensity of the angle that light is striking it, how long the light shines on that object and how much light is absorbed.
- Reflected colors are the only colors visible when looking at an object, while all the colors are absorbed.
- Light travels faster than sound.
