Cunningham Messenger

March 26th

All the News from the Coolest Little School in South Austin!

It feels like Spring!

Dear Cunningham Families,

Give your cobra a pat on the back today! Ms. Rodriguez and I were so impressed with our students and staff got right back to the business of learning on Monday morning and kept it up all week long. It was such a joy to see students and teachers working and learning together - well-rested and happy.

Returning to On-Campus Learning

We are welcoming back more students and it feels so good to see old and new friends in the building. There is If you would like for your student to return to on-campus instruction, please let us know by filling out this form.

STAAR Update

We were granted permission to move STAAR testing dates back (dates are listed below). STAAR helps us all understand how much a student knows and has mastered in core subject areas. These tests are simply one measure of student knowledge, and the results can provide important information to families, teachers, administrators and the students themselves. This is especially important as we know that students have been affected in different ways due to the changes we’ve had to make in providing instruction during the pandemic.

While Austin ISD has offered remote learning to families for the entire school year, Texas Education Agency guidelines require us to administer the STAAR on-site. It is our goal for every student who is able to come to campus to do so. All safety measures will be in place for the administration of the test including masks, social distancing where feasible, and easily available handwashing and sanitizing stations.

New Programming at Cunningham

Next year we will be offering two K-1 classrooms - one Dual Language instruction classroom for bilingual students and one English instruction classroom. Multiage grouping builds strong relationships among teachers, students, and families (Miller, 1994). We believe this program will be a great addition to the Cunningham Community. If this is something you are interested in learning more about please join us via Zoom on Wednesday, March 31st at 6 (Spanish) and 6:45 (English) by pre-registering here.

Lots of great things happening at Cunningham! (In-person cooking lessons with PEAS start 4/12)

Cobra Strong,

Heather Petruzzini

Principal

* Early Pick-Up: We know that sometimes students need to be picked up early because of appointments however, we kindly ask that you wait to call us once you have arrived so that we can maximize your student's time in the classroom.

*Changing Transportation Home: Last-minute changes happen! We get it! Unfortunately, when they are too close to dismissal it can be difficult to relay the message to your student's teacher in a timely fashion. For student safety, we ask that you notify the front office and/or teacher about transportation changes no later than 2:00 p.m.

*During drop-off and pick-up we ask that all adults please wear your mask and stay in your vehicle so that we keep everyone safe and protected. If you walk up to drop off, please have your mask on.

*Please send children to school with masks daily.

Humans of Cunningham

Dear Cobra families,

As you have probably heard or seen by now, one of our school-wide No Place For Hate activities this year is a project we are calling "Humans of Cunningham".

Inspired by “Humans of New York” (“HONY” for short), a photoblog created by photographer Brandon Stanton, “Humans of Cunningham” will showcase the personal stories of individuals in our Cunningham community. Students and staff will participate. The final product will be a short video showcasing some of the stories from our villagers (students and staff - pending consent and permission from home).

The goal of “Humans of Cunningham” is to promote the unique stories of our villagers. It has the potential to yield some deep thought and insight, beyond the surface of what you know...or think you know about someone.

Stay tuned for "Humans of Cunningham"...coming soon late Spring 2021!

With Peace, Love, and Gratitude,

Ms. O'Connor
