Principal Weekly Update to Families
09-26-2022
Message from Dr. Antonelli
I hope everyone had a great three day weekend. Thank you to everyone who attended our first family event last week, Popsicles on the Playground. It was great to see and speak to some familiar faces as well as some new ones. Thank you to our PTA for putting this together!
This week we will have our Open House. It will take place on Wednesday September 28th at 6pm. We are excited to welcome everyone to school. We will start with everyone in the ALL Purpose Room. Please enter through the All Purpose Room doors on the side of the building. Please see the Open House Flyer. We will have many great Norwood Community partners available for you to visit. Looking forward to seeing everyone Wednesday Evening!

Breakfast and Lunch Program
As a reminder breakfast service begins at 8:40am. On June 30, 2022 the free breakfast and lunch waiver provided by the state ended. The Meal Benefit Expiration and Grace period will end on Thursday, September 29, 2022. This means that students that were free/reduced for this month and have not applied to receive the continued benefits will now be charged for the full meal price. All families, regardless of status, will need to complete the lunch application. We still need 108 families to complete their application. It is important that all families complete the lunch application. This helps with our Title I funding, resources and activities. It can help provide discounts on resources and activities for teachers and students. Information on how to complete your form can be found here. You can also contact the main office or see the district website if you have questions.

Title I Book of the Month - September
The Day You Begin Jacqueline Woodson’s lyrical text and Rafael López’s dazzling art remind us that we all feel like outsiders sometimes-and how brave it is that we go forth anyway. And that sometimes, when we reach out and begin to share our stories, others will be happy to meet us halfway. Watch read aloud here: "The Day You Begin" on YouTube.

Curriculum Information
Students in grades 1 - 5 will continue their Beginning of the Year diagnostic assessments reading. These assessments are done so that we can better plan instruction to meet students' needs. These assessments will also guide students learning in their iReady My Path. Please see below for further information.
iReady BOY Diagnostic
Diagnostic Purpose:
Our students will take both a math and ELA diagnostic on the iReady platform to provide the best diagnostic data to inform instruction.
Diagnostic Information:
Testing Window: The window for the diagnostic will be from September 13-September 30 (see Kindergarten window below)
Diagnostic Length: The length of the diagnostic by grade level:
Grade K: This window will open on October 17 - November 18
Grade 1: Two 20 to 30 minute sessions
Grades 2-5: Two 40 to 50 minute sessions
This diagnostic provides us much information about what students can do and what they need support with in math and reading. The results of the diagnostic are used by the school and teacher to plan the whole class, small group and individualized student instruction. The results are also what are used to develop students' My Path on iReady. Students should be completing a minimum of 50 minutes each week in their individually designed My Path for both Reading and Math to see learning growth.
It is important that students put in their best effort so that we can plan appropriately for their learning. You can find some resources regarding the assessment here: https://i-readycentral.com/familycenter/

VOWS - Volunteers of Warwick Schools
From The Rhode Island Department of Education
What is Chronic Absenteeism?
Chronic Absenteeism is a measure of how many students miss a defined number of school days for any reason. Rhode Island defines Chronic Absenteeism as the percentage of students who miss 10% or more school days during the year (or 2 days per month).
Research shows that chronic absenteeism is associated with a number of negative consequences for students, including lower achievement, disengagement from school, course failure, and increased risk of dropping out.
Early Dismissals
Please refrain from requesting an early dismissal for your child after 2:45pm. The dismissal process begins at 3:00pm and it becomes very difficult for us to fill an early dismissal request once the process begins.
Student Absences
Students will be marked absent, no matter the reason, if they are not in school.
If the absence is COVID related it will be entered as an excused absence.
STUDENT ABSENCE CALL-IN PROCEDURE
In accordance with Rhode Island State Law #16-19-10, Notification of Pupil Absence, the Warwick School Department requires that all parents/guardians call their child’s elementary school on the day that he/she will not be in attendance. We would like to receive all calls by 9:15 in the morning. If you are aware of a pending absence, feel free to call at any time prior to the day of the absence. In the event we do not hear from you, an automated call will be sent at 10:00 a.m. to inform you that your child did not arrive at school.
ASPEN Family Portal
It is important that the Aspen Family Portal is updated with correct address and contact information. Students can only be released to emergency contacts listed in the Family Portal so please make sure this is updated. You can find more information about the Family Portal on the district website here. Using the WPS Family Portal (PDF) WPS Family Portal (direct link)
Important Reminders
- The parking lot for arrival and dismissal hours is a one way loop.
- Please be mindful of the busses and the crosswalks.
- Outside toys are not allowed in school. We have enough for students to do and games to play!
