Board of Education
An update from Barrington 220: Feb. 20, 2019
Referendum Information Session THIS SATURDAY!
In order to inform the entire Barrington 220 community about the school district referendum question on the April 2, 2019 ballot, the Board of Education is holding the first of three information sessions on Saturday, Feb. 23. All community members are encouraged to attend and ask questions. The agenda at all meetings will be the same (short presentation, followed by Q&A).
Saturday, Feb. 23: 9am at Barrington High School (616 West Main Street, Barrington)
Monday, March 4: 9:30am at BMS-Prairie (40 East Dundee Road, Barrington)
Wednesday, March 6: 7pm at BMS-Station (215 South Eastern Avenue, Barrington)
In addition, you can also visit the new referendum section of the Barrington 220 website. Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions, estimates on how the referendum may impact your taxes and specific plans for each Barrington 220 school.
If the referendum passes, it is estimated that the owner of a $500,000 home would pay an additional $100 more in annual property taxes, which amounts to less than $2 per week, or 27 cents per day.
Tentative last day of school is June 4
Due to the inclement weather we have experienced so far this school year and resulting make-up days at the end of the year, the tentative last day of school is Tuesday, June 4. The Board of Education will approve the final 2018-19 academic calendar in April.
Barrington 220 has also adjusted the dates for the 2019 summer school session. Please review the following new schedule:
High School (No class on Fridays)
Session 1: June 10-June 27
Session 2: July 1-July 23 (no school July 3-5)
Middle School/Elementary School
June 6-June 27
(Classes WILL take place on Friday June 7, June 14 and June 21)
*Note: The Jump Start I/DL summer program at Sunny Hill WILL have classes on Fridays. Jump Start II will NOT have classes on Fridays.
Middle schools continue to expand supports and services for all learners
At its Feb. 19 meeting, the Board of Education heard a presentation from district administrators about Barrington 220's district improvement plans. This year's presentation focused on the middle school level. The ultimate goal is to provide students with opportunities for growth, in order to maximize post-secondary opportunities. Plans to continue supporting students in the future include:
- Provide social emotional support for all students
- Provide English Language Learner students with greater systemic supports during critical transitions from elementary-to-middle school and from middle-to-high school, so that continual gains are made at each level
- Increase access to Core Level curriculum and supports for all students
- Provide more professional development for teachers
