Continue the Love of Learning at Home
Friday Focus
Darnaby Families,
It's hard to believe we are entering into our final week of Distance Learning. Remember, the week of May 11 - 15 will be a time for staff to wrap up the school year, determine class placement for 20 - 21, and even return to the building (within strict guidelines) to gather personal items and prepare their room for summer.
We have also asked teachers to begin bagging up supplies and personal items for students, so that when we are given a green light, we can plan for pick-up of student items. More details will be shared on that, as information information becomes available.
Please be sure to notice this week, that we have added information for the Darnaby Summer Reading Program. This is a great way to encourage students to read over the summer and all the information and resources you need are available in this Smore page.
Be sure to enjoy this week's special STUCO edition of KDES. We appreciate the leadership of our Student Council and hope you enjoy this tribute to them.
It is hard to say goodbye, especially when you didn't know those high-fives and hugs would be the last of the school year. Although this is the last week of Distance Learning, we do have plans for a special end of year KDES broadcast next week, so be on the look out for that.
Thank you for choosing to partner with us. Hoping that each of you are safe, happy and healthy!
Sincerely,
Chris Reynolds

Darnaby Summer Reading Program
The Darnaby teachers and staff would like to encourage our students to read every day this summer. Studies show that when kids don’t read over the summer, they lose core reading skills and fall behind when they go back to school. Help your child to avoid the summer slide, because the reading skills they gain over the summer months will help to prepare them for the upcoming school year.
We want every child at Darnaby to read at least 20 books this summer and to keep track of those books on their Summer Reading Log. Any student that reads 20 books can return their Summer Reading Log at Meet the Teacher or any time during the first week of the school year to be eligible to receive a prize. Students can also turn in one Summer Reading Log for every 20 books they read, increasing their chances of winning. We will be awarding a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card to one student from each grade level. Students must return their Summer Reading Log to be eligible for a prize.
PreK-2nd grade students check out the Summer Reading Bingo page that includes lots of fun ideas to motivate your young reader. 3rd-5th grade check out the Sequoyah list for next school year. Remember to write down the title of each book read on the Summer Reading Log, including books your child has read or books you have read to your child. The Summer Reading Log must be complete with 20 titles and a parent and student signature to be eligible for prizes.

Hi Darnaby Families!
As we come to the end of an unexpected school year, now more than ever we are looking at how to build connection and compassion for each other. It sounds simple, but there is an incredible power empathy can bring to a person and a child. Brene Brown is a research professor, best-selling author, and speaker who studies shame and empathy describes empathy as a way to form meaningful relationships and connections.
In your child’s lesson plans this week you will find a video explaining empathy in comparison to sympathy as they are often confused. Empathy is not something that is simply defined, but needs to be practiced and modeled. Kids are looking to the adults in their lives more than ever on how to handle stressful and changing times as we have already discussed. Reacting or judging someone’s emotional response can sometimes cause shame, fear, and disconnection. The more a child can practice empathy and feel empathy, the more they will feel understood, safe, and connected.
The video from Brene Brown is a good one. It reminds us that when a person or a child is having a difficult time, they need compassion, connection, and courage from another. They need empathy.

SUMMER SAFETY TIPS
SUMMER is a time for outside fun and learning! The Committee for Children outlines important personal safety rules. Please take the time to go over some simple rules that can help keep your child safe this summer.
- Always wear a seat belt.
- Always wear a helmet when riding a bike.
- Look both ways before crossing the street.
- If you are going swimming, make sure an adult is watching you.
- If you see a dog, always ask the owner if you can pet the dog first.
- If you find matches or a lighter DO NOT touch it. Tell/report it to a safe adult.
- If you find a gun, DO NOT touch it. Report it to a safe adult immediately.
- Always ask your parents first before you go with anyone, even to a neighbor’s house.
- If a stranger approaches you trying to get you to go with them yell “No, get away.” Report the stranger to a safe adult.
- If someone is making you uncomfortable or touching you inappropriately, yell, “STOP” and run to a safe area. Inappropriate areas include any area that is covered by a bathing suit. It is also inappropriate anytime you do not want to be touched/hugged. Again, say “Stop” or “Please don’t touch me.” Always report it to a safe adult.
