Nairit Sarkar, 6th grade, and Neha Thomas, 8th grade, will both represent Plano Schools this Wednesday at the Collin County Spelling Bee. Good Luck on Wednesday!

2. PTA News

A. Congratulations to Rocio Martinez- Mendoza who has been selected as Rice Middle School's staff PTA Life Member. Senora Martinez, as she is known to her students, is originally from Mexico. She has been a teacher at Rice for four years and also leads the Muslim Student Association. Last year, she sponsored a group of science students as they developed the national award winning App Mind Glass to help those with dyslexia. Additionally, Senora Martinez was a 2015 Plano ISD Education Grants to Education recipient for creating a foreign language classroom library using children's books. She loves to learn and find ways to become a better teacher, mom and person. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and children, ages 13, 9, and 10 months. She also loves to camp, hike, bike, travel, and cook

3. Best of Luck to our RMS Ravens Whiz Quiz teams!

The Rice MS Whiz Quiz teams will compete against teams from the throughout the district this Saturday 2/6 in the District Whiz Quiz Tournament! Each year this is an opportunity for our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teams to demonstrate their prowess and sportsmanship. The top two teams from each grade level will advance to the district finals on Wednesday 2/10 in the PISD Administration building.

4. Attention all Muslims and MSA members!

MSA is inviting Brother Ryan (very well-known and Youth Director from our Plano Mosque) next Monday, February 8th at 3:30 in Room 728 for an interactive talk.


Don’t miss this great opportunity to gather and have fun.

5. Interested in AVID for the 2016-2017 school year?


Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) is a year long elective that teaches study skills, provides in class tutorials, encourages leadership and community service, and requires students to participate in courses of rigor. Recruitment for the 2016-2017 school year will get underway soon. If you are interested in your child joining AVID next year, please attend the Parent/Student Information Night on Wednesday, February 10th, at 6 PM in the library. Our AVID coordinator, Mrs. Dyer, will present information about AVID at Rice and the high school level. Current Rice and high school AVID students will share their experiences as well.

6. 2016 SAGE Summer Expo!

SAGE of Plano ISD Council of PTA's is proud to announce that our annual Summer Expo, showcasing summer camps and resources for special needs and gifted families, will be held Saturday, February 6, 2016 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. We are hosting the event at Plano Senior High School in the Cafeteria. SAGE Summer Expo gathers the best summer and specialty, indoor and outdoor camps/seminars/services for Special Needs, Gifted, and General Education children and families.The Expo is one of the largest summer camp and resource fairs of its kind in the north Dallas area.

10. Join the Rice Cheerleading Squad!

If you are a 7th grader interested or want to know more about what Rice Cheer is all about, please attend the student interest meeting Wednesday, February 24 at 3:45pm in Ms. Hughes room 813. We will have current cheerleaders present to tell you what they love doing. Parent meeting with be held Monday, February 29 at 5:30pm in the Rice Library. The parent meeting is mandatory for all cheerleaders wanting to join. If you have any questions contact the cheerleading sponsors Mrs. Epley nicole.epley@pisd.edu or Ms. Hughes ashley.hughes@pisd.edu.

11. Jasper Cheer Tryouts--Meeting on 2/3!

Attention 8th graders who want to bring their spirit to Jasper High School!


The cheer tryout packets will be available in the school office beginning February 2nd. There will be a tryout interest meeting after school at 3:45 on Wednesday, February 3rd where you can mix and mingle with current Jasper Cheerleaders – come see what Jasper cheer is all about!
