Quality learning for all in a caring community.

Dear Parents and Friends of our school Kia Ora/Bora Da/Konichi Wa/Hello
Week 6, Autumn and we are half way through Term 1 - where has the time gone? Our weeks are certainly rushing by.
I read a really good short snippet from Karen Tui Boyes - Stop Rescuing. A timely reminder for all parents regardless the age of our tamariki :
I am a light house rather than a life boat. I do not rescue, but instead, help others to find their way to the shore.
It is often easy to rescue children when they have learning opportunities, and I have attempted to stand back and allow the lesson to unfold, rather than jumping in to be the hero. It's not always easy.
When your child cant find their shoes, give them time to look for them before you run to their rescue. If they didn't complete their tasks, make sure you have predetermined consequences and follow through with it.
If we are parents constantly remind or children, they do not have to think nor take responsibility. Step back and allow them to learn the consequences. If hey forget their lunch, they will not die. If they don't have their raincoat and it starts to rain, they will get wet. They will not melt.
One of the most frustrating parts of parenting is seeing your child have the same experience over and over again until they learn it. However, this is how the learning process works. Use some coaching techniques and gentle questioning instead of simply telling children what they need to do. Ask, "What do yo need today to make your day successful?" or, :Have you got everything you need for today?" Again resist the often strong desire to rescue - your job is to empower.
Our RTLB (Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour) Kim Manukonga has put together this really good slide to share with children if they are feeling worried about getting/having covid. We thought the slide is great. We are sharing it with you and we will be sharing it with the tamariki next week.
A seperate message via the community feed, in HERO (our school app) has been sent out about a positive covid case in our school community.

VISION AND HEARING TESTING
To minimise the risk to students, staff and the wider community, the Vision and Hearing Technicians will not be visiting schools to undertake routine screening, until further notice.
Our advice to concerned parents or caregivers during this time is to, where possible, make a private appointment with an optometrist or audiologist to have their child assessed.
We thank you for your understanding as we navigate this challenge. We look forward to returning to normal services as soon as possible. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Rachel Smith (North Taranaki) rachel.hsmith@tdhb.org.nz or Tracey Stockman (South Taranaki) tracey.stockman@tdhb.org.nz.
