Adolescent and Drugs

Does experimental drugs abuse harm teenagers?

Drug abuse is a serious social and public health problem. Drug abuse by teenagers often correlates with poor academic achievement, difficulties with peer and family relationships, emotional problems, and damage to physical health.

Academics

Adolescent drug abuse leads to declining grades, absenteeism from school and activities, and enhancing the potential of dropping out of school is 5 times greater.Drug use can also cause mental and cognitive impairments that make it difficult for students to succeed in school.

Peers and Family Relationships

Substance-abusing youth often are alienated from and stigmatized by their peers. Abuse of drugs by youth may result in family crises and jeopardize many aspects of family life, sometimes resulting in family dysfunction. Both siblings and parents are profoundly affected by drug-involved.

Social and Economic Issues

Substance abuse can drain a family's financial and emotional resources. The social and economic costs are financial losses and distress suffered by drug-related crime victims, increased burdens for the support of adolescents and young adults who are not able to become self-supporting.

Health Problem

Injuries due to accidents (such as car accidents), physical disabilities and diseases by sexual contact or through sharing of unsterile drug-injection equipment. Mental health problems such as depression, developmental lags, apathy, withdrawal, and other psychosocial dysfunctions are linked to substance abuses. Drugs alter brain chemistry in ways that produce enjoyable physiological and emotional effects. Addiction occurs because of drug use that flood the brain with high levels of chemicals associated with pleasure.
