Students Recognized at the January 9th Washington School Board Meeting
WES Teaching Principal Kelli Colarusso recognized George Caron, Zoey Gravlin, and Evelyn Robicheau,
- George, Zoey, and Evelyn are the WES HOWLer Award raffle winners for the months of November and December. Throughout the month, students in the entire school are awarded HOWLer awards based on the 7 Habits of Wolf Leaders. All students are put into a raffle and one student from each class is chosen to have lunch with a Washington Police Officer. Congratulations to this month's winners, and thank you for showing that everyone can be a leader!
- George was also recognized for his goal to beat the Guinness Book World Record for largest loom bracelet. He has followed Habit #2 - Begin with the End in Mind by making a goal of 30 miles and creating a plan to have the entire school help him. His family joined our whole school morning meeting on Friday, January 6th to show his progress. The bracelet went back and forth width-wise in the gym 12 times! George and his classmates will turn this into a math problem during PE class by measuring the gym to see how long his bracelet is. George and his family hope everyone at WES will help him reach his goal!

Hillsboro-Deering Elementary students in second grade have been working on a nonfiction literacy unit for the past two months. During this unit students have learned how to use all of the text features of nonfiction books, such as the glossary, index, table of contents and captions. They also learned how to compare facts across multiple texts for their research project.
For the first part of the unit students were given books at their reading levels that covered a variety of nonfiction topics from habitats to what to do in an emergency. They practiced reading their books to build their fluency and then worked on comprehension skills through note taking activities and retell work. Students were also able to share what they had learned in their books in order to teach others about the new knowledge they had gained.
During the final weeks of the unit students were assigned an animal to research. Again, students were given books at their reading level, this time though they were given three books about the same animal. On the first day of this work, the level of excitement in the room was palpable. The students were so excited to see the new books they would be reading and the animals they would be learning about.
During this project, students read their books thoroughly, took notes and completed graphic organizers in order to create their celebration projects. In some rooms the students are creating posters, while in another they are creating a Google slide presentation. The students are enjoying being creative while teaching others about the animals they have researched.
Grade Six students had a team building adventure tubing at Pat's Peak.

The Office of Student Supports
Working Together to Keep Our Schools Healthy
We continue to have multiple upper respiratory and stomach viruses circulating. We ask the community to remain diligent in order to keep our school buildings well and open.
Students or staff experiencing new onset of symptoms should stay home and rest until they are fever free (without fever reducing medication), and are experiencing improvement of symptoms. Anyone who demonstrates symptoms while at school will be dismissed by the school nursing team and asked to remain home until return criteria is met.
Please keep your child home for an extra day of rest if they are experiencing any of the following symptoms.
Fever or chills (including subjective fever)
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Sore throat
Nasal congestion or runny nose
Fatigue
Muscle or body aches
Headache
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea
Students and staff staying home when sick is one of the strongest mitigation strategies in stopping the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom. If you are unsure if you should send your child to school, we ask that you keep them home and contact the school nurse. School nurses have COVID tests available to support our staff and students. Please contact your school nurse with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your support and cooperation.
Winter Coats Available for Students
A large number of new winter coats were donated to the HDSD by the local Knights of Columbus Council serving the St. Mary and St. Theresa Parishes of Hillsboro and Henniker. The coats were funded by the local Knights of Columbus through fund raising activities. The coats provided are part of the Knights of Columbus national “Coats for Kids” Program. The coats are all brand new and available to any student regardless of need. Please contact your building school nurse if you are interested in a new coat. The coats will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.
End 68 Hours of Hunger
NH Medicaid
- The NH Department of Health and Human Services has an important update for families with children covered by NH Medicaid. During the COVID-19 federal Public Health Emergency (PHE), New Hampshire has provided continuous health care coverage for children and families that receive Medicaid. When the PHE ends, this extended coverage will end too, and families may need to complete a renewal to re-certify their children’s Medicaid eligibility. Learn more about planning for the end of the PHE here.
Updated Website Calendar
The calendar on the SAU website has been updated to be more user-friendly and to provide selectable event views by building. In addition, the individual school calendars have also been updated to include events that are occurring in the other schools. These changes enable a single view for everyone to see what is happening across the SAU and District.
By clicking on the calendar name on the left-hand panel, you can hide that particular calendar's events from the larger view. You also can subscribe to a calendar to receive updates and changes to events.
