Making Your BIG Decision
Confirming your college enrollment plan is a BIG decision. Take the time to carefully evaluate all of your offers of admission. Talk to your counselor, your family, and your Crosby Scholars Senior Advisor.
- Offers of admission are conditional upon review of your final transcript. Keep performing at the same competitive level throughout this semester so your grades do not drop. Your college will review your final transcript and may revoke your acceptance if you have performed below the college’s acceptable standards.
- No college can require you to commit to attending prior to May 1, the National Candidates Reply Date, with the exception of Early Decision or NCAA athletic scholarship programs.
- Attend prospective student events at the colleges to which you were admitted.
- If you have been offered a spot on a college’s Wait List, learn what you need to do to be an active member of the Wait List. http://thechoice.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/29/tip-sheet-what-to-do-after-your-admission-decision-arrives/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0
- When you have received financial aid awards, compare them carefully and ask questions if you don’t understand the awards.
- Once you have made your final enrollment decision, notify the other colleges that accepted you that you will not attend. Please notify schools as soon as you know you will not be attending. Source: NACAC
- Add your college name to your Crosby Scholars student portal.

Each senior in attendance will be recognized individually and is welcome to invite two guests to this celebration! Check your Crosby Scholars student portal for details. Navigating the Financial Aid Process
- the scholar/family applies for financial aid by submitting a FAFSA to the federal processing center (and the CSS/PROFILE or institutional forms, if required by the college)
- the processing center responds by producing a SAR (Student Aid Report)
- the family reviews the SAR for errors and/or additional forms needed and takes the appropriate action
- the family reviews its EFC (Expected Family Contribution) noted on the SAR
- the college receives information from the federal processing center and processes the information to make an award that is sent to the student (this is most likely sent by e-mail, so check your e-mail frequently or your college portal)
- the scholar contacts the financial aid office at the college if he/she has questions about his/her financial aid award
- the scholar/family responds to the financial aid award by sending in an award acceptance, if required — the scholar informs the school of outside scholarships
- the scholar applies for a Last Dollar Grant by submitting the application by May 14, applications are made available in the Crosby Scholars student portal at the end of April
- Using the tool posted in the Crosby Scholars student portal, the scholar/family compares financial aid awards with the bill received; billing is done by term or quarters and gift aid is divided
Understanding Your Student Aid Report (SAR)
What is the Student Aid Report?
A paper or electronic document that gives you basic info about your eligibility for federal student aid. It also lists your answers to the questions on your FAFSA.
How and when will I get my SAR?
You are encouraged to include a valid e-mail address to receive your SAR electronically, but you can also receive a paper copy in the mail. You can also view the SAR by logging in with your FSA ID and password. The schools you listed on your FAFSA will receive your SAR electronically within a day after it is processed. You can see a summary of what will be on your SAR here: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/next-steps/student-aid-report
What info does a SAR contain?
If your application is complete, an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) will be in the upper right-hand corner. You will receive further instructions if your application is not complete. You will also see a Data Release Number (DRN) on the first page. You will need the DRN if you allow your college to change certain info on your FAFSA.
What am I supposed to do with my SAR?
Review it carefully! Schools may ask you to verify the accuracy of the data provided. If you don’t make any changes, keep it for your records.
What if I make a mistake?
Review your SAR carefully. If you made a mistake you will need to correct or update your FAFSA. Click the link “Make a correction” at fafsa.ed.gov to edit your FAFSA.
Accepted? Enrollment Decision Made? What’s Next?
You’ve been accepted and decided which college to attend, but there is still a lot to do. Don’t forget about these important steps:
- Filling out and reviewing FAFSA and Student Aid Report (SAR). Check in with the Fin/Aid office at your intended school.
- Sending deposit to school
- Registering for orientation, typically orientation is over the summer or right before classes begin
- Signing up for housing and picking a roommate, either random or with someone you know
Update Your College Name in the Student Portal!
Many of you have received college acceptances and have decided where you will be going to college in the fall! Please update your Crosby Scholars student portal with your college name once you have made your final decision. Follow the steps listed below.
- Log into student portal
- Click the Profile tab
- Click Edit This Info above the personal info box
- Scroll to the bottom of the page. The last line will be a drop down box for College Name where the student can select his/her school name.
- Once the field is populated, the student must click the Update button to save changes.
- If the college name is not listed, please have the student email seniorprogram@crosbyscholars.org with the their name, high school, and name of their college/university.
A few notes:
- Seniors cannot see the College Name selection until they click Edit this Info, once the field is populated, it will show on the Profile page.
- Schools are listed by their official name, not abbreviations or nicknames.
- There are options for military branches and gap year, if a student does not plan to enroll in a 2-or-4 year school right away.
The BIG Roommate Decision
Whether you decide to room with someone you know or decide to get randomly matched, it is important to be honest. Consider a few things about yourself as well as your potential roommate.
- What are your/their study habits?
- What are your/their sleeping habits?
- What are your/their social habits?
- What are your/their cleaning habits?
- What is your/their philosophy on borrowing?
If you decide to be randomly matched, your college will ask you similar questions in order to match you with a roommate as best as possible.
Parents can monitor their senior’s Crosby Scholars student portal, view announcements and events, and confirm if their senior has fulfilled each program requirement by logging into their parent portal. If you need assistance accessing your parent portal, email seniorprogram@crosbyscholars.or or call our office at 336.725.5371.
Only students who complete the Crosby Scholars Senior Program are eligible to apply for Last Dollar Grants and Crosby scholarships.
