A Quick Recap Of Our Learning!
Reading Workshop: This week we focused on "envisionment" (a fancy word for visualizing). We practiced how to make movies in our minds as we read to strengthen our comprehension. Each child has received a reading log to track their reading volume. We will be looking at these toward the end of next week! Ask your child to take a peek!
Coming Up This Week: We'll be magnifying characters as we read and learn what a complex character is!
Math: We are working on Place Value through the millions! Students are working on their addition/subtraction skills with ungrouping/regrouping. Additionally, they are working on being math detectives when solving word problems to pull out important information and decide what operation to apply to find the answer.
Think Central is our digital learning platform & students can show you their scores from in class/homework on their dashboard (they know how to do this) The expectation is that they are showing their work on their iPad or on paper to show if needed. The program provides instant feedback to students and allows us to intervene with them to specifically target a skill that needs attention.
Writing: We learned how writers really think about what their audience would want to read about when they write. To do this, we practiced writing "seed" ideas and elaborating on one moment to really zoom in and tell a story.
WtW: Our spelling program is called "Words their Way" which is an approach to spelling that emphasizes patterns and spelling rules in a sorting routine. Last week we practiced our sort routines with everyone using the same sort. This week, be on the look out for your child's first group sort to study for the week!
S.S. Students are learning about the 3 branches of government at the state level.
A Note Regarding Daily Duties...
All work/tasks are in our Daily Duties Course In Schoology & are there for your reference. Your child should be able to produce any work you want to see. Because we run our classroom as a workshop, this allows for time in class to practice skills. If your child is coming home with a lot of work to do at night, please let us know, as this is a great indicator that time is not being used wisely during the day.
