The Student Athlete

Over half of Verbum Dei students participate in one of our six sports teams. We are blessed by the commitment of our student-athletes and parents. My goals for our sports program are simple:

1. At Verbum Dei, all athletic participation leads to personal and spiritual growth of our students.

2. At Verbum Dei, all sports participation prepares students to compete academically and athletically at the college level.

3. At Verbum Dei, all sports participation creates brotherhood.

In a recent visit to Verbum Dei, Jonathan Franklin, former student athlete (LA Dorsey, UCLA) and professional football player (Green Bay Packers) spoke to 11th grade students about setting goals, being disciplined, and making good choices (see pictures below). Now a member of the Community Affairs and Engagement Team for the Los Angeles Rams, Jonathan challenged the students to “battle the man within everyday” to be the very best.

I want to take time to honor the 100+ Verbum Dei athletes who “battle the man within” and make sacrifices daily to wear the Verb name. Thank you for sharing your talents with the Verb. But more importantly, thank you for putting your academics first. I pray you have the discipline to always prioritize your academics, the humility to get help before you need it, and the willpower to always make good choices.

Eagles all day!

Grad at Grad

The Grad at Grad is a list of six characteristics that all Jesuit, Cristo Rey schools hope their graduates will embody. For Verbum Dei, this list represents the overall goals of our academic, athletic, and spiritual programs.
