East Elementary
November 2023
Lunch Bunch Friday, November 3
- 3rd Grade: 11:00-11:40
- 1st Grade: 11:45-12:25
- 4th Grade: 12:30-1:10
During this time, you are able to enjoy lunch with your child picnic style out on our large playground. You can bring lunch for you and your child, or your child can get a lunch from the cafeteria. We do have a few picnic tables outside, but we encourage you to bring blankets and/or lawn chairs. You can arrive as early as five minutes prior to the event to get your area set up. As students begin to head outside, they will meet you. When you are finished eating, feel free to play with your child at recess.
Once the event is over, we ask that you allow your child to line up with their class and head in. Parents are asked to exit the playground using the gate at the southeast corner next to the building. We hope to see you all soon!
Just a reminder, kindergarten and 2nd grade will have their lunch bunch on Friday, April 12, 2024.

Math is MATH… but it sure doesn’t look like it once did to many parents.
DID YOU KNOW… There is a reason this organization starts with a ”P”. We have one of the largest and most active PTO’s in the district because you guys (parents, grandparents, step-parents, foster parents… the people who do ALL the parenting things) SHOW. UP. for these kids and East. You’re even bothering to read this!
That’s why the PTO tries their best to serve parents too. So this year we’ve asked teachers from across the grade levels to present at our PTO meetings. In September teachers shared information on reading methodology, test scores, and even translated some of the acronyms and terms we parents see everyday… but may not always understand. We received great feedback and will host another group of teachers to discuss MATH in our Tuesday, November 14th meeting. So if you’re curious about why your child’s Math looks like a bunch of doodled circles, boxes, and dashes– Show-Up for this meeting.
We’re also responding to the fact that there’s something our typical volunteer roster is lacking… a little testosterone! We wanted to intentionally get more guys in the building because, lets face it, Dad’s so often “bring the fun.” With this in mind, and in conjunction with American Education Week, November 13-17, we are launching our “BOOK BROTHERS” program. We are inviting a dad, grandpa, or other male role model to come into the classroom each day to read a book to the students. The teachers have selected the time that works best for their class schedule and the books they would like to have read. We need your help filling these positions in order to make this event a success. https://signup.com/go/YTqUBug
For many the #1 theme of November is being THANKFUL. The PTO is all about the teachers and students of East, but we are also super grateful for PARENTS! We’ll do our best to continue to serve you and hope you continue to show-up.
Again, the next opportunity for both is at our PTO Meeting on Tuesday, November 14th at 5:30pm. Childcare will be provided.
Thanks again to everyone who contributed to our APEX fundraiser. You can see the results below.
Mrs. Moyers’ Message
Emotional intelligence (or EQ) may be a term that you’ve come across in the news or in your social media feed. Emotional intelligence refers to a person’s ability to recognize, understand, express, and manage his/her emotions. While academic intelligence is absolutely important, emotional intelligence is equally important. In fact, there is research that suggests a person’s EQ is twice as strong of a predictor of future success in relationships and careers than their IQ.
A great way to help foster emotional intelligence in your student is to model it for your child. Naming your feeling, talking about what happened to bring that feeling on, expressing the feeling in a safe, healthy way, and then managing the feeling is a powerful teaching tool. One strategy we teach students at school is to use an “I-Message”.
“I-Messages” are a great tool to help you get your message across in an honest way without sounding mean. “I-Messages” help you to tell someone how you’re feeling, why you’re feeling that way, and what you would like for them to do differently. When you use an “I-Message”, the other person is more likely to listen to what you have to say, and they may be more willing to work towards a solution.
A “You-Message” usually expresses anger and places blame on the other person. Most people react to “You-Messages” by defending themselves and finding a way to place the blame on you. Using a “You-Message” decreases the chances the other person will work with you to find a solution to the conflict.
For example, instead of saying, “You never listen to me. You’re always the one doing the talking.” try saying “I feel frustrated when you don’t listen to what I have to say because I listen to you when you talk. Please give me a chance to talk.”
Some additional strategies we teach students to use at school include: taking deep breaths, getting a drink, taking a walk, stretching, reading a book, drawing, and counting to 10.
East Elementary Kids Craft Fair!
We are excited to host the annual Winter Kids Craft Fair for students at East Elementary. Students will be able to bring crafts created at home to sell at school on the mornings of Friday, December 8, and Friday, December 15. Sales will run from 7:25 - 7:45, and students will need to be here at 7:15 am on those days to set up their booth.
Crafts to be sold must be approved by Mrs. Job prior to sale. During the sale, items will only be allowed to be sold for $1.00 or less (.25, .50, or .75) and students will only be able to purchase items using quarters. Ideas for crafts might include: bracelets, keychains, painted rocks, bookmarks, magnets, ornaments, etc. Pinterest is a great resource, especially for finding Christmas/winter themed items. Crafts need to be made by the student with as little help from an adult as possible.
We will host another sale in the spring the same night as the Art Show (March 12). That event will run from 5-8 and is open for parents to shop as well, but with the same guidelines as this winter sale (ie: quarters only, must be student made, etc). You don't have to participate in this sale to be able to do the one in the spring. Students can sign up for both, either or neither sale.
This event is completely optional and is open to all students K-4 who attend East Elementary. All profits made will go entirely to the student who made the craft. If your child would like to participate in this, please fill out this form and return it to Mrs. Job (with an example of the craft to be sold) by November 17, 2023. All students whose crafts are approved will have a ‘booth’ set up at all of the mornings that the sale will run. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Job ljob@jackson.k12.mo.us.
News from the Nurse
Don’t forget to clean those water bottles daily (hot water and soap) to prevent strep infection! and continue to WASH YOUR HANDS (that is the BEST way to prevent infection)!!!
We are in need of extra boys and girls pants (prefer elastic waistband pants/leggings)- no jeans please, and boys underwear.
Please continue to screen your child before school, and keep your child home if they are sick. Remember, our policy is 24 hours free of vomiting, diarrhea, and fever (without fever-reducing medication in 24 hours). Other symptoms need to be improving in 24 hours before your child can return. Please do not give Motrin/Tylenol to your child before school if they are not feeling well because it can mask a fever (the medication takes the fever away so it is unknown whether your child has a fever 4-6 hours after taking the medication). Jackson R2 considers a temperature of 100.1 or higher as a fever.
