The Suez Canal separates the Sinai Peninsula from the rest of Egypt. The Suez Canal is one of the worlds most important waterways. It was built in the mid 1860s by Egyptians. Ships use the canal to pass from the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. In making this journey they avoid traveling all the way around Africa. This area is a major crossroads between Africa and southwest Asia.
Sahara Desert
The word Sahara comes from the Arabic word meaning desert. The Sahara is about the size of the U.S. Eastern and Libiyan deserts are apart of the Sahara. The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world. It is also the world's 3rd largest desert after Antartica and the Arctic. The area of the Sahara Desrt is 3.629 million miles squared.
Crops
Egypt's 3 main crops are sugar cane, grains, and vegetables. Flooding of the Nile would make Egypts soil rich. The rich soil would allow plants to blossom. Egyptians would wait for the yearly flood. After the flood they would be ready with seeds to plant.
