CHRISTMAS PROGRAM
A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Howard Families,
This is a very busy time of the year for everyone and kids get over excited with anticipation for Christmas. We do our very best to keep routines as normal as possible, but there are several classrooms and school activities planned in the days ahead. Be sure to read newsletters and check emails for updates on upcoming events. Our first two events are coming up! Next Tuesday is the Christmas Program. It will begin at 7:00 at Northwestern’s Auditorium. Then Saturday, December 8th at 9:00 AM we have our second family fun event, Cocoa and Canvas. I hope to see all of you at each of the great events.
We have noticed several students coming to school without a coat. Please check that your child has their winter coat before leaving for school. For some reason, kids don’t like to wear a coat. I have yet to figure this out. Also, we have several coats on the lost-and-found rack in the cafeteria. We have asked students if any of these coats belong to them and many have not been claimed. My son is 20 years old and I think he has lost his coat for the last 15 years. SO if you have a child like mine, I feel your pain. Come to Howard and take a look at the lost and found rack you just might Be surprised.
A few weeks ago information was sent home about our A.L.I.C.E training. The teachers at Howard have spent time talking to your children about what they will do if we encounter an intruder. We will have our first practice drill before we leave for Winter Break. Students will practice how to lockdown. During this drill students and/or teachers will shut off the lights, make sure the door is locked and with a secure barricade. Students will find a safe place in the classroom to wait quietly until we give the word that we have an all clear.
Last bit of news. Our PTO has graciously provided an opportunity for teachers at Howard to write a grant to receive money for classroom materials such as books, flexible seating options and manipulatives for math and reading. Teachers who were interested have completed a grant application and a committee will be reviewing these and will choose two winners who will each receive $200.00 and one who will receive $400.00. It is because of your continued support and dedication to quality education that has made this possible. Thank you for all you do for our school.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Hello!
I cannot believe Thanksgiving has already come and gone! I was able to visit every classroom during the month of November and eat lunch with numerous students!
In kindergarten and first grade I read the story "The Pout Pout Fish and the Bully Bully Shark." In second grade the students created posters for the Prevent Child Abuse conference this spring. The theme of the poster was "Children Need." The students brainstormed different things that children need to be safe, healthy and happy! All third grade students received a lesson on respect, more specifically, the importance of cooperation. In fourth grade, we focused on random acts of kindness. Lastly, fifth and sixth grade completed a career interest survey to help prepare for Career Day that will take place next semester!
