Summer 2020

Heroes Enjoying Success

We will create a culture of high expectations through motivation and bring awareness to student self-worth. We will help our students grow confidence and empathy. These aspects will produce a sense of pride, which will be seen in our entire Harlan community.

10 Summer Art Challenges

Dear Harlan Artists:

Now that it’s the end of the school year, I want to give you 10 Summer Art Challenges. Look over the list below and complete these ideas in any order.

********Take picture and share ideas on Seesaw!!!********

  1. Supplies: Buy a little bit of paint or construction paper, scissors and glue or other art supplies at the Dollar Tree to use all summer. Find a box to keep your stuff in and decorate the outside with your name.
  2. Make a Summer/2020 Scrapbook out of recycled materials like newspaper or other paper in a stack folded down the middle. You can glue or tape things inside of your scrapbook, or paint or draw with crayon right over the newsprint. Fill it up! Bring it back to school!
  3. Chalk Art: when you do Mrs. Cayson’s lesson, you can also create some artwork by taking a section of sidewalk and designing the whole thing like it’s your piece of paper. Take a picture!!
  4. Cereal Box Challenge: What can you do with a cereal box? Just thinking about this is a brain booster! Make a list! Try one of your ideas. Hint: you can always use a side of the box to color on. What can you do with a whole box? Come up with as many ideas as you can.
  5. Paint on a Tin Can to keep your pencils in. Get an adult to help you make sure it’s a safe can, not sharp.
  6. Nature Rubbings: some of you might remember taking the side of a crayon with something under the paper, like a leaf and creating a rubbing. Place this in your scrapbook! Take a picture!
  7. Stone Painting: Everyone remembers reading Scribble Stones with Mrs. Arnett. Make another painted stone!! Keep it or give it away!
  8. Make a Rainbow: Really! Take a glass of water to a window where and when the sun is shining and you should see a rainbow in your room. See if you can put a piece of paper down over the real rainbow and copy over it with crayons.
  9. Paper Sculptures: Collect paper towel tubes, newspapers, cardboard and other recycled stuff, then build! A sculpture is a 3-D art object, not a picture! You will need glue, or tape or a stapler to join your stuff together. Of course, you can paint this!
  10. Make a Collage: Use a sturdy rectangle of cardboard as the backing. Cut shapes out of other interesting scraps like other pieces of cardboard, newspaper, junk mail or magazines. Feel free to paint on your scraps before or after you glue it all together. You can make this a picture of something, or just arrange it in a colorful or fun way.

Remember, keep creating, and I love and miss all of you!!!!

Stay safe,

Miss Amina Hall
