Ross Report: November Newsletter

04/11/2020

Dear Ross Families,

As we reflect on the first 2 months of school, from where we started to how far we've come already, we are very appreciative of the support from you, our Ross family. We are very fortunate to be working and learning alongside your children every day and feel privileged to be part of their 'in-class' learning experience.

Since the start of school, students have taken part in a number of events and learning experiences already. To highlight a few... students had the opportunity to participate in a Terry Fox walk of the school yard, take part in Rowan's Law Day by wearing purple, participate in and learn about Secret Path Week, and dress up in costumes or black and orange to celebrate Hallowe'en.

Ross is a great place to grow and learn. We are looking forward to more events coming in November and December. Stay tuned!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Donato

Information from the Office

Daily Covid-19 Assessment

Just a reminder...

Parents are required to screen their children for Covid-19 symptoms each day before school Located on the DSBN Website or our Ross Website, you will find the Daily Covid-19 Family Screening Tool which will help you to determine next steps should your child be displaying any symptoms. If he/she is showing symptoms, please use the tool to assess next steps and to determine what should be done next. Parents may need to keep their children at home and may need to contact NRPH or a health care provider to see if testing is recommended. We appreciate your efforts in working with us to help keep our school safe.

Secret Path Week

Ross has recently become a Legacy School. As such, our commitment includes engaging, empowering and connecting students and educators to further reconciliation with Indigenous communities through awareness, education, and action. In partnership with the Gord Downie/Chanie Wenjack Fund, we took part in Secret Path Week from October 17th to October 22nd. Our older students read the story of Chanie Wenjack, a 12 year old Ojibwe First Nations boy who fled from his residential school in 1966. Gord Downie felt compelled to share his sorrowing narrative through a graphic novel titled, Secret Path. To bring this story to life for our younger students, the grade 6,7, and 8 students in Mr. Deiter and Mr. Ferrara's classes recreated the story with sketches, and summaries which were chronologically posted in the hallway forming its own secret path. We thank the students for their participation in this meaningful learning experience.
