Curriculum Connection
K-5 Social Studies/ Science- September 2022
Kindergarten Social Studies and Science
My Family and School
Students will describe character traits of different roles of people in their families and their school. They will discuss their individual rights, how people make rules, and how those decisions are made for their families and their school. At the end of the unit, the class will a mission statement the class will follow throughout the school year.
Patriotism
Dealing With the Weather
Students will learn weather is a combination of sunlight, wind, snow or rain, and temperature in a particular region at a particular time. People measure these conditions to describe and record the weather and to notice patterns over time.
1st Grade Social Studies and Science
Rule and Laws
Students will be able to explain the roles and responsibilities of people in the government and why cities have laws. Students will also learn and discuss how to create peaceful resolutions to different disputes.
Seasonal Patterns
Moon Phases
2nd Grade Social Studies and Science
Responsible Citizenship
What Plants Need
Animal and Plant Dependence
3rd Grade Social Studies
Unit 1: Physical Features of Missouri
3rd Grade Science
Unit 1: Life Cycles
Students will start by dissecting seeds to look at and graph their growth. They will then look at a meal worm life cycle, making observations and graphing what each stage looks like. Students will then create a 3-D visual of a life cycle. Last, they will research a life cycle of various organisms.
3rd Grade STEMSCOPES 3D
Bundle 1: Animal Development and Survival
Anchoring Phenomena Event Students interact with a video of a plant growing under a tree. Anchoring Phenomena Driving Question What information can we display in a visitors’ center about our new animal?
Mission Performance Task from Action Plan The student’s mission is to research an animal and its environment in order to create a diorama showing the plant and animal life cycles and the benefits of the animal living in a group.
4th Grade Science
Unit 1: Life Science: Plant and Animal Parts
Investigative Phenomena:
What do an animal’s unique parts have to do with its survival?
Explore 1: Plant Guts
- What are the different parts and structures of plants?
Explore 2: Interactive Model of Body Systems
- How do our internal body structures interact to help us survive?
Explore 3: Adaptation Match Up
- How do physical traits support an organism’s ability to survive, grow, and reproduce?
Unit 1: Life Science: Sense Receptors
Investigative Phenomena:
How do the senses help organisms respond to different things?
Explore 1: Reactive Senses
- How do different forms of communication help animals survive?
Explore 2: Sensing Danger
- In what ways do animals sense and respond to danger?
4th Grade STEMSCOPES 3D
Bundle 1: Organism Structures and Behavior
The students will begin by viewing a video of an eye dilating, and will participate in a teacher-led discussion about how the pupil changes as it senses light. The teacher should then guide the discussion toward how you can group organisms by their best sense receptors, and how those sense receptors help the animals survive.
Anchoring Phenomena Event Students interact with video of a pupil dilating.
Anchoring Phenomena Driving Question How can we group organisms by their best sense receptors, and describe how those sense receptors help the animals survive?
Mission Performance Task The student’s mission is to design a zoo that is organized by grouping animals with the best sense receptors, and to describe how having those sense receptors helps animals survive. In addition, students will design a scavenger hunt for students who go on field trips to the zoo.
4th Grade Social Studies
Unit 1: Regions of the US (last week in September/ October)
5th Grade Science
Matter and Energy in Plants
Students explore what plants need to grow. They then observe seeds growth only using air and water. They then problem solve how to create a plant that will survive in the Arctic.
Energy Transfer and Food Webs
Other than heat, how do animals depend on the Sun?
Students judge the quality of food available in a healthy plant compared to a sunlight-deprived plant.
Do all organisms eat plants?Students become a live model of a food web. They then look at how the energy in common foods originally came from the sun. Students then create a landscape plan that will attract insects, plants and animal wildlife to balance the ecosystem.
Ecosystems
Students create a 3D model of an animal's habitat that contains different elements to meet the animal's needs.
5th Grade STEMScopes 3D
Bundle 1: Matter and Energy Flow in an Ecosystem
Anchoring Phenomena Event Students interact with a video of a turtle eating in an ocean ecosystem.
Anchoring Phenomena Driving Question How can a self-sustaining garden be designed that would provide enough food for the community?
Mission Performance Task from Action Plan The student’s mission is to design a self-sustaining garden that provides food for the community.
