Creativity and Innovation are Key Drivers in the Global Economy

Sir Kenneth Robinson, a leading thinker and speaker on creativity said, "Creativity is as important in education and literacy and we should treat it with the same status." Similarly author Richard Florida stated, "I call the age we are entering the creative age because the key factor propelling us forward is the rise of creativity as the primary mover of our economy,

Definition of Creativity and Innovation

  • brainstorming, new and worthwhile ideas
  • elaborate, refine analyze and evaluate new ideas
  • develop, implement and communicate new ideas
  • be open and responsive to new and diverse perspectives
  • demonstrate originality and inventiveness while understanding real world limits
  • view failure as an opportunity to learn

Relationships to Other C's

Creativity is closely aligned with collaboration, communication and critical thinking. Innovation has a social component and requires adaptability, leadership, teamwork and interpersonal skills.

Ways to Integrate Creativity into Your Classroom

  • use a menu to facilitate student choice
  • students develop creative solutions to a class or school problem i.e. bullying
  • Science 8th grade - students design plans for a device that will assist people with disabilities
  • Art 12th grade - after studying a composer's work, students compose a theme and then create variations in that composer's style.
