Wordle Warm-Up
With your group, come up with the ten most important words from the chapter. One person from your group will come type your list into the smartboard computer.
We will use the "class wordle" to spark discussion to open class and lead us in to the Chapter 4 Presentation!
Reflection
You were asked to:
- Step 1: Identify 2-3 models/strategies from the chapter that you believe would be most beneficial and/or relevant for your students.
- Step 2: Write a one page (double-spaced) reflection on how you plan to implement the models/strategies with your current student population.
- Step 3: Using the comment feature of Google Docs, provide feedback to two of your peers. Your feedback should consist of 1 aspect that you agree is beneficial for his/her particular students and 1 recommendation/question that you are posing to improve the implementation of the model/strategy.
Let's Talk About It:
Introduction to Text Structure and Graphic Organizers
Before we get into the assignment, read this article, "Understanding Nonfiction: Text Features and Text Structures".
As you read, we would like to have a "silent, live conversation" on TodaysMeet in response to what you're reading.
Possible things to comment on:
- Questions about the article.
- "Ah-ha" moments
- Connections
- Takeaways
- Answers to colleagues
- Anything else that comes to mind
*Please use @ to direct your comment to a classmate.
In-Class Assignment
In class assignment:
- Read "Classroom Strategies: Text Structure" on AdLit.org.
- The authors of the article above identify 5 common ways that texts are structured. Choose 3 reading selections from your content area - 3 different selections written in 3 of the 5 previously identified structures.
- Create 3 separate graphic organizers (one for each text selection) that you could give your students that support their comprehension of each of the 3 texts from Step 2.
We will be here to support and answer any questions as you create graphic organizers to go with your chosen texts.
Submit your texts and accompanying graphic organizers in this folder.
Simile Exit Ticket
Similes compare two unrelated things. This exercise will provide you the opportunity to abstractly portray the big picture of a concept(s) in a way that sums up its meaning. We are asking that you make a connection between differentiating reading strategies for your students and something unrelated.
