EOC Survival Guide
A Map for the 3-Hour Tour
Plan the Time
How can you use the 3-hour time frame most effectively? Try one of these scenarios to chunk the time:
- THE STANDBY- Teach three 50-minute lessons with 10-minute brain breaks.
- THE SCHOLARLY SCHEDULE - Chunk a longer lesson like a socratic seminar or lab experience. Plan for transitions at logical breaking points such as between explanation, research, discussion.
- THE TIME-IS-ON-MY-SIDE APPROACH - Explore a new tech idea, project-based experience, or multiple intelligence lesson that you haven’t had time to try.

OR choose a low or no-tech option like post-its!
Create student-generated concept maps, anchor charts, or mind maps to reinforce concepts.
Keep Time
Keep the class period moving by using the clock to your advantage. Create more awareness of the time by using unexpected time frames for activities. For example, rather than giving students 10 minutes for an activity, tell them they have 9 minutes and 32 seconds. Is it weird? Yes! But it creates a different level of attention for the brain. Display an online timer while students are working.
Build in Brain Breaks
Get up and move! Boost Memory! Restore Energy! Focus Attention! Passing periods are a structured brain break for our students. Without them, focus and energy are sure to be fragile. Build in some brain breaks for yourself and your students! Check out the articles below for some quick ideas.
Add Perplexity or Relevance
How did we teach without YouTube? The beauty of a short video to add some perplexity, laughter, or relevance to your lesson is a great thing. Check out these videos or find your own to keep the students locked in to your lessons.
