From the Principal, Gwen Elder
There is no doubt that this year is different and like none we have faced before, but we are blessed to begin the 2020-2021 school year. COVID-19 may have unexpectedly disrupted how we have traditionally educated our students at AMCHS, but it has not disrupted the spirit that lies within us as AMCHS Tigers. This setback has given us an opportunity to reflect and appreciate our way of life, which we often took for granted, and value those closest to us, our families. Moreover, we were able to examine our instructional practices and prepare for learning in non-traditional ways. We will continue to refine our onsite and virtual learning models to ensure the needs of all students are met!
During the last three weeks of school, our students have adjusted well to the expectations that we have set and settled in to the daily routine of a high school student. Also, our teachers and staff continue to amaze me by their nurturing disposition and their eagerness to impart their wisdom in the lives of our students. Administrators, teachers, and support staff have worked tirelessly to prepare for the school year. Many have adjusted curriculum to accommodate onsite and virtual learners, arranged their classrooms to comply with social distancing guidelines (as much as possible), integrated practices to address our students' well-being, and structured our environment to be safe, supportive, and top-notch. Our teachers are to be commended for the extra work they have done to prepare for the start of the school year. We know that a welcoming classroom atmosphere prevents behavior issues and positively impacts student learning. We are committed to ensuring your child is engaged in a high-quality environment that is conducive to learning for all students. As a result, we are anticipating another Tigerrific year at AMCHS.
Our theme this year is, “Rise Above It.” Given the challenges surrounding COVID-19, we will “Rise Above” and strive for greatness in all that we do. I challenged our teachers and staff to “Rise Above It.” We will encounter situations in life that we will not have control over, but we will “Rise Above It” and be our best selves daily! As a school family, we will maintain a disciplined environment, support positive relationships, integrate research-based practices, and encourage risk-taking. Furthermore, we will be compassionate, loving, caring, and hardworking educators who are dedicated to “Educating the Hearts and Minds of Students for Life.”
At AMCHS, we will continue to strive toward excellence in everything we undertake and be a positive influence in our community. More importantly, we will encourage our students to become caring, productive citizens who develop academic and social skills to be a beacon of light in our community. Also, we will foster a growth mindset, maintain a disciplined environment, and hold students accountable for their actions. We applaud the dedication and resilience of our students. The U.S. News & Report named AMCHS one of America’s top High Schools for the fifth consecutive year. Also, our students who participated in the Advanced Placement exams last May had an 84% pass rate, which is not an easy feat, considering our students were not in traditional school the last ten weeks of the school year. Our Speech & Debate program had six students who competed in the National Speech and Debate Association National Virtual Tournament. They performed well, and two placed nationally.
As we begin a new year, we will continue to achieve at the highest level and be committed to our mission of “Educating the Hearts and Minds of Students for Life.” We will continue to focus on strengthening character education in our students. During Success Time, weekly lessons are shared with our students to help communicate our campus rules and procedures, expectations, announcements, campus initiatives, brain-based learning, positive behavior interventions and supports, and instructional strategies to impact learning. Furthermore, students are recognized for exhibiting respectful qualities and promoting an environment that will empower students to make good choices.
AMCHS will be celebrating its 100th birthday in October. Though we cannot gather in large crowds like we initially planned, our students will engage in smaller celebrations on our birthday. Please access the A&M Consolidated Centennial Committee’s Facebook page to stay abreast of the latest events.
We welcome your continued involvement at AMCHS. We know that parents are our students’ first teachers, and research shows direct parental involvement positively impacts student success. Stay involved with your students. We will “Rise Above” the challenges that are presented and strive to be our best selves daily.

From the Counselors' Office
Fall is a busy time for students as they adjust back to the rigorous academic schedule at AMCHS. The Counseling office is striving to assist students in numerous ways.
One of the goals for the AMCHS counselors each year is to be as accessible as possible to students. Students can sign up electronically from the AMCHS Counseling website to see their counselor. Counselors will check the sign-in throughout the day and will try to see their students in an expedient manner. We are also accessible to our virtual students through email, phone, Schoology, and even Zoom if they prefer.
Regarding students’ schedules, the last day to change a level (moving from AP/PAP to Honors or regular) is Friday, September 18. The last day to drop a course for a study hall or off period without the course showing record of “Withdraw Passing/Failing” is Monday, September 14.
In past years, the counselors have always held meetings with grades 9-12 during the month of September to make students aware of how our office can assist them and of the many things that their grade level class need to be aware of. We are currently in the process of creating virtual presentations for each class and these will be posted to our webpage soon!
Seniors need to be aware that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opens on October 1. We encourage all college bound (four year, community college, trade school) seniors to complete this, even if they do not think that they will qualify for federal aid. More information can be found here: https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa and https://studentaid.gov/apply-for-aid/fafsa/filling-out.
The PSAT will be administered to all 11th grade students and to 9th and 10th grade students that signed up in August. Non-testing students will have late arrival on this day.
Please visit or call the AMCHS Counseling and Guidance office (764-5510) or check out our webpage: https://amchs.csisd.org/counseling/meet_the_counseling_staff. We also encourage students and parents to follow the AMCHS Counseling Facebook page for the most up to date information from our office.

Leadership CSISD
Leadership CSISD is an opportunity for community members to get an inside look at the goals, operations and culture of College Station ISD. During the program, Leadership CSISD participants will have several opportunities to interactively explore first-hand how it all works and offer insightful feedback that supports CSISD's continuous improvement efforts.
Because we would like to be sure we are reaching our target audiences of community members, parents, and business owners, we ask that participants not be employees of the district or current Board of Trustee members. Additionally, we ask that our applicants be committed to attending all of the meetings if possible.
Meeting six times during the 2020-2021 school year, participants will get to know some of the people who are responsible for programs and services, and see how the district creates a climate of success for our rapidly growing, diverse student population. Our 2020 Leadership CSISD class will also be able to build relationships with district leaders and others in our community during this experience.
Update from the College Station ISD Education Foundation
The Education Foundation was pleased to present a check to A&M Consolidated staff for $5,837.00 for their participation in the Employee Giving campaign. This money represents half of the donations personally given last school year by AMCHS teachers and staff and can be used for a campus project at their discretion. Thank you to all these terrific Tiger employees who support Foundation projects!
We hope that you have noticed and are enjoying the banners celebrating the Consol Centennial! Thank you community members and alum groups for supporting the Centennial fund!
Banners, commemorative bricks and benches are still available for purchase. You can find out more about the celebration here: https://www.consol100years.com/
We were very sad to learn of the passing of Bill Patton this summer. From elementary educator and AMCHS athletics coach to school bus driver, Coach Patton made his mark on the lives of so many in CSISD. Since 2011, Bill and Susan Patton have personally supported a scholarship for CSISD Seniors. It was his hope that this scholarship would become endowed and carry on his legacy. You can donate to the Susan and Bill Patton scholarship in his memory here: https://givetokids.csisd.org/ways-to-give/donate.html
