Where 4th graders learn and grow!

Big picture

November 30th, 2018

We were back in full swing this week with lots of excellent science discussions. We started a new unit in writing and reading. Our focus in writing will be persuasive essays. Our focus in reading will be nonfiction text features and text structures.

You hopefully have seen the new reading log come home along with the parent letter. I will place a copy of the reading log onto my website so if your child loses theirs, you can copy a new one at home. Your child will need to contact a friend to ask what questions I assigned for that week, however. I will put a generic copy up, but keep in mind each week I assign different, specific questions.

Have a great weekend!

CLAIM-EVIDENCE-REASONING

This is a standard form students will fill out after experiments. They will use this form with Phenomenal Science in middle school also. This was the first time they did it, and I was a little nervous. But the kids did awesome!

Think-Write-Share

This activity is also used a lot in science. Students are posed a question. They have one minute or two to think about the question. NO WRITING. Just thinking. Then they have two minutes to write what they are thinking. Finally they have 1 minute to share their thinking in a group of 3-4 with a timer. Nobody else in the group is allowed to speak or interrupt the person who is sharing unit the minute is up. Once the minute is up, other members ask clarifying question of the speaker. We reconveined at the end and discussed our findings. This lead to some powerful scientific talk. I had goosebumps.

NONFICTION TEXT FEATURE SCAVENGER HUNT

STUDENTS WERE LOOKING FOR A VARIETY OF TEXT FEATURES SUCH AS GLOSSARY, INDEX, HEADINGS, DIAGRAMS, GRAPHS, CUT AWAYS, TIMELINES AND MORE.

SPELLING HOMEWORK

Your child has to bring an artifact to school on Monday that represents one of the uni, bi or tri words from the list. Also, I have attached the Quizlet for this week. Make sure your child practices for the test on Tuesday!!!!! Give your child a practice test on Monday night as well to help them prepare.

GOOGLE slideshow of student Coat of Arms

Students completed pg. 52 in their spelling books and learned about a coat of arms. They had to include:

-An animal they admire above the shield

-symbols inside the shield that represent themselves

-a motto that has meaning to them on the banner

-supporters on both sides of the shield.

I thought they turned out so awesome. I wonder if you can find your child's. They want you to guess. They will tell you and explain their coat of arms this weekend.

Achieve 3000

STUDENTS DID REALLY WELL ON ACHIEVE 3000 THIS WEEK. KEEP IN MIND THAT YOUR CHILD CAN PRACTICE ACHIEVE 3000 AT HOME TO HELP BUILD STAMINA AND PRACTICE ANSWERING QUESTIONS. THIS HAS SHOWN TO HELP SEVERAL STUDENTS IN CLASS WHO HAVE BEEN DOING IT AT HOME. THEY CAN COUNT THIS ON THEIR READING LOGS FOR MINUTES.

PERSUASIVE ESSAY ANCHOR CHARTS

JUST TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA, THESE ARE THE ANCHOR CHARTS I USED TO GUIDE STUDENTS IN THEIR WORK IN THEIR WRITING NOTEBOOKS. THIS WEEK THEY GENERATED A LIST OF CLAIMS THEN STARTED TO ADD SUPPORTING REASONS.

Math News! We started unit 3 Fractions

WE COMPLETED LESSONS 3.1 AND 3.2 THIS WEEK. IT TOOK SOME RETEACHING, SO I WANTED TO BE SURE THEY UNDERSTOOD THESE CONCEPTS BEFORE MOVING ON TO LESSON 3.3 THIS WEEK. I WOULD URGE YOU TO HAVE YOUR CHILD PLAY EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS MATCH ON THE EVERYDAY MATH SITE FOR ADDITIONAL PRACTICE. YOUR CHILD IS BRINGING HOME HIS/HER GRADED MATH TEST AND SCORING SHEET TODAY IN THE FRIDAY FOLDER.
