Message From Principal Engdall
Greeting Shaw Montessori Community,
Dr. Montessori is quoted as saying, “the greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, the children are working as if I did not exist.” This is something that our teachers have the delight of seeing every day in our Montessori prepared environments and is a shining example of the power of a well-trained/well-prepared adult. In the absence of the prepared environments the magic of this task has been monumental for us and you.
Our community during the pandemic has been a beautiful example of the power of working together for a common good. The teachers working hard to bring a multi-sensory education through a computer screen to our children’s mind, heart and hands and you being there to help receive and support the learning. We hope that you too are seeing moments when your children are engaged in building that fierce independent Montessori work-spirit.
We have the opportunity to celebrate the great work of our teachers. I am sure that every child here has a story. From now until March 12th you may nominate that teacher for the Silver Apple Award. You may fill out the attached award and send it USPS or you may enter online at www.azfamily.com/goto/silverapple
Wishing you the very best,
Principal Engdall

Message From Shaw PTA
The “Adventure” Mural is complete!
Meet the Artist behind the Mural: Luisa Leon was born in Mexico City. She moved to Arizona at 13 and overcame her language barrier by using art as a form of expression. Luisa graduated from Camelback High School with honors and attended Arizona State University on scholarship to study Business and Mandarin Chinese.
In 2018, she started her own business, AZLotusArt with a vision to bring art to those who may not have experienced it before.
Luisa is a proud mother of a daughter, Mariely, who’s 7. Mariely actually takes credit for naming the mural, “Adventure.”
In mid-March, Luisa posted on Instagram @azlotusart that she would teach painting for free as a way to help connect with people. Her classes have grown significantly over the past few months and she has students attending from all over the world.
“No mud, No Lotus” is her motto. If anyone is interested in participating in her classes, please contact her at azlotusart@gmail.com or through messaging on Instagram.
The PTA reached out to Luisa when they saw her mural (pictured above) which is painted on the back wall of Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Café located at 7th St. & Jefferson. Luisa’s mural was the winning design voted on by the students in October. The PTA members approved the project in early 2020. The funds for this project are outside of those raised from the Fun Run.
