Hobart High School Brickies Visit The Trades!

At the School City of Hobart, we try to motivate and inspire our Brickies to set goals for the future and embrace what speaks to them. For some, they may welcome the idea of college and pursue a degree or join the military. Others may be ready to step right into the workforce and start their career! Whichever path is pursued, the School City of Hobart wants to be there for our students and their future. This year we had 50 students attend the 5th Annual Construction & Skilled Trades Day! They were able to hear about career opportunities in union construction trades and the many directions it can take them. While taking a cruise around the facility, they learned from construction workers, bricklayers, pipe-fitters, roofers, ironworkers, and more! They were able to perform hands-on construction tasks with professional instructors and their apprentices (some who were Brickie Alumni!). After the day, all of our students were very grateful to have the opportunity to explore the many career possibilities that are available to them after high school. Some even took the time to email our counseling department to let them know how thankful they were for this experience and their new excitement for the future. We The People

"We the People" is an annual competition that challenges our students to understand and consider the fundamentals of our American government and apply them to contemporary issues. The program focuses on enhancing students' understanding of the institutions of American constitutional democracy and discovering the contemporary relevance of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. This year we had 18 members on the team and they shined! The competition was held virtually, which does not slow down our Brickies, and they prepared by examining several questions that could be asked during the competition. They then simulated a congressional hearing in which students "testified" before a panel of judges. Students demonstrate their understanding of constitutional principles and have opportunities to evaluate, take, and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues. Our students had poise, confidence, knowledge, and the character to not only compete to their best ability but also bring home the 1st place title for the Region! This advances them to the State competition that takes place this month. Stay tuned for those results!

Senior Ethan Ferba Breaks the 6-Dive School Record

History was made on November 30th as senior Ethan Ferba lit up the diving scoreboard, putting together a masterful diving list against Kankakee Valley and Lowell for A NEW SCHOOL RECORD!

Not only did Ferba’s 6 dive list include some of the most difficult dives out there, but he was able to execute them with near perfection! Ethan threw one of the most difficult dives, a 405c, inward 2.5 and it paid off big time scoring over 70pts! Ethan’s mental game is top of the line, and amazingly he was able to stay calm and confident throughout the meet as he inched closer to the record.

Ethan has secured his place in School City of Hobart athletics history! It is with great pride to announce Ethan Ferba as the GREATEST OF ALL TIME in diving (6 dives) for Hobart High School. Congratulations, Ethan!

Veterans Day In The School City of Hobart

Each year we embrace Veterans Day in our schools by honoring those that have served and are currently serving. This day reminds us of the freedoms that we have and the reasons why we have them. It is a time to stop and think about the many sacrifices that were made by the brave men and women that serve our country and the families who they leave. We take this one day every year to strongly acknowledge and educate our students, but we live and teach the pride we have for our military and country every day. Our schools are proud of our heroes and created special videos acknowledging our veterans. Our Hobart Middle School band performed inspirational music for the school and our high school and middle school students competed in essays through the local VFW - with some essays advancing to state! Take a moment to visit our dedication web page at www.hobart.k12.in.us/veterans and always take time to thank a veteran.

Rehearsal For Murder

We were thrilled to see our Brickies back on the stage with a full audience and they did not disappoint! All cast members came together beautifully to put on the production of "Rehearsal for Murder!" As the curtain opened, the theatre became the set for the play. The playwright turns on the stage work light and prepares for the first reading of his new play. The actors, producer, director, and others connected with the show come onto the stage, and under their humorous (and utterly real) theatrical talk, tension grows. It is discovered that everyone connected with this play was involved with another play by the same playwright. At its opening night, exactly a year ago and in this same theatre, the beautiful leading lady, who was also the playwright's fiancee, was murdered! As these people start with the new play, startling connections to the murder begin to unfold. The growing tension reaches the boiling point with surprising revelations, countered by others even more surprising. The dazzling, yet basically logical twists build to a climax and solution that are theatrically stunning! It was really a great play done by confident, professional Brickies. If you missed it, keep your eye out for the Spring musical!

Join the Battle to End Vaping

"This is Quitting" is a free and anonymous text messaging program from Truth Initiative designed to help young people quit vaping. The first-of-its-kind quit program incorporates messages from other young people like them who have attempted to, or successfully quit, e-cigarettes. Our messages show the real side of quitting, both the good and the bad, to help young people feel motivated, inspired, and supported throughout their quitting process. We also send young people evidence-based tips and strategies to quit and stay quit. This is Quitting is tailored based on age (within 13 to 24 years old) and product usage to give teens and young adults appropriate recommendations about quitting.

To enroll in This is Quitting, teens and young adults text DITCHVAPE to 88709. The first messages they receive will ask for their age and product usage so that they are able to receive relevant messages. Users receive one age-appropriate message per day tailored to their enrollment date or quit date, which can be set and reset via text message.

Mindful Practices for Parents and Families

This week, if you find yourself feeling disconnected, ungrounded or overwhelmed, try integrating one or all of the following practices into your routine:

1. Welcome more consciousness to your commute. Our commutes, whatever they may be, can be a prime time for disconnection and autopilot to sneak its way into our brains and our bodies. Many of us have experienced driving through our usual haunts and arriving at our destinations with no idea how we got there. Teleportation, maybe? This “red light” practice by Elisha Goldstein can help us to stay present and connected with ourselves, even in the midst of the same old drives.

2. Move your body, with gentleness and joy. During the winter months, it can be especially challenging to find the motivation to do much more than puddle on the couch with some Netflix. Fortunately Cara Bradley is here to remind us that an active lifestyle doesn’t necessarily mean some intense hill sprints, or heading to the gym every day after work. By following these eight tips for channeling our energy into gentle physical activities we enjoy, you can feel happier, healthier, and feel more grounded in your own skin.

3. Settle your body and rest deeply. It can be tempting to let our ticker-tape minds run free when our head hits the pillow at the end of the day. But reviewing the day can wait: Instead, commit to taking a few minutes for yourself and your sleep with this science-backed, insomnia-fighting guided practice from Diana Winston.

December SEL Lessons for K-5:

Listening to others and listening to self. Listening with understanding rather than just listening to respond.
Our practice will focus on listening to others as we get to know peers in the classroom.
December will focus on self-care and resilience this month. We have all conquered a lot the past few years. Although there have been several rough patches in life, we can work together to conquer the hardship. Let’s focus on what we already have in our life and the ability to be kind to ourselves and others each day.
