Solar System In Perspective
Creating a realistic model - By: Emily Nykorchuk
Sun = Bowling Ball (8" diameter)
The diameter of the sun is about 864,938 miles. You could line up 109 Earths across the face of the sun.
Mercury = Pinhead (0 .03" diameter)
Mercury's diameter is 3,030 miles, about the size of the United States. This makes it about two-fifths the size of Earth.
Venus = Peppercorn (0.08" diameter)
Venus is the third smallest planet in the solar system, after Mercury and Mars. It is a near twin of Earth in size, mass, and density. Venus's diameter is about 7,521 miles .
Earth = Peppercorn (0.08" diameter)
Earth's diameter is about 7,900 miles.
Mars = Pinhead (0.03" diameter)
Mars has a diameter of about 4,200 miles.
Jupiter = Chestnut (0.9" diameter)
Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system and about a tenth the size of the sun. The diameter of Jupiter is about 88,846 miles.
Saturn = Acorn (0.7" diameter)
Saturn is the second largest planet in our Solar System. Saturn is about 75,000 miles in diameter and is almost ten times the diameter of Earth.
Uranus = Coffee bean (0.3" diameter)
Uranus is the third largest planet in the Solar System. It has a diameter of 31,765 miles which is about four times the diameter of Earth.
Neptune = Coffee bean (0.3" diameter)
The diameter of Neptune is approximately 30,758 miles. This makes Neptune the 4th largest planet in the Solar System, after Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus.
Pluto
Pluto < Pinhead
The diameter of Pluto is 1,430 miles, only about two-thirds the diameter of the moon.
