What are the benefits of tutoring?
- Tutoring offers individual and structured learning
- Develops a rapport between teacher and student, allowing for a more meaningful connection to material
- Enhances student's performance and growth
- Creates a positive attitude toward the subject
- Encourages self-directed learning
- Allows for practice in the related subject area without the risk associated in a classroom setting
- Improves self-esteem
Students are encouraged to attend a tutoring time that best meets their schedule.
This means that if a teacher does not offer tutoring at a time that works for the student, they may attend an alternate teacher's tutoring session for that subject.
Please reach out to your student's teacher if there are special circumstances.

How Should Trust Cards and ID's be Worn?
Trust Cards should be worn horizontally in plastic protectors
with ID's hanging vertically in front.
Click here to view our STEAM Trust Card-Level Requirements.
Remember, at the end of each six weeks, we will review daily attendance, grades, discipline referral, and tardy data by-student to determine who qualifies for each of the three levels of trust cards. Then, according to the data, new trust cards will be issued each six weeks.
Level 1 Blue Trust Card contains 6 privileges. Level 2 Red Trust Card contains 12 privileges. Level 3 Platinum Trust Card contains 17 privileges. Again, these privileges can be redeemed from any STEAM staff member throughout a six weeks. Use them because you have earned them by your hard work in showing respect, taking responsibility, embodying excellence, having an amiable attitude, and making a difference! Also, ask your teachers how you can earn back privileges that you have already redeemed.
Students who receive a Positive Office Referral will automatically obtain a Platinum Trust Card for six weeks.
Click here to view descriptions for our Trust Card privileges.
Remember to wear your Trust Card, redeem your privileges, and celebrate your success! As you redeem your privileges, please find us, because we want to take your picture and celebrate with you!
It Pays to Have Platinum!
Grades, attendance, and behavior all impact students obtaining a Platinum level Trust Card.
Students who receive a Positive Office Referral will too, be issued a Platinum.
Another way that students may level up to a Platinum is by sharing with us
Send us a tweet, Facebook post, e-mail, or Instagram shout-out showing us your STEAMer going above and beyond in our community, they just might reach Platinum!
Doctor and Personal Appointments
Please make sure that when scheduling appointments for students, that they are before or after school. Attendance is crucial and we ask that if an appointment must be made during the school day, that they occur after 10:00 am.
Failure to Report to STEAM U or Academic Lab
Students are required to report to their scheduled STEAM U and/or Academic Lab time.
All students are aware of their destinations for each scheduled time.
Failure to attend either STEAM U or Academic Lab will result in an afterschool detention.
On Fridays, our STEAM students will get to choose from the available clubs during their STEAM U/ Academic Lab times instead of completing their Canvas Modules and/or attending academic labs.
Students may choose a different club each STEAM U, each week.
The STEAM U Friday Clubs List will be posted for students in the Cafeteria.

High School Endorsement Selection- ACTION REQUIRED
Beginning in the 2014-2015 school year, the state of Texas implemented a graduation plan that allows students to pursue an area of interest. The Foundation graduation plan requires students to indicate an endorsement upon entering 9th grade. Students are in the process of submitting course requests for 9th grade, and must also indicate which endorsement they are planning to follow.
The window to submit endorsements through Skyward is February 27th-March 24th.
(For more details on endorsement pathways, click here.)
8th Grade Students:
Directions for choosing endorsement in Skyward Family Access:
Step 1: Log in to Student Access.
Step 2: Select the Endorsement tab on the left side of the screen.
Step 3: Select "Declare an Endorsement".
Step 4: A pop-up window will display where you will select an Endorsement. Students who are undecided should select "Multidisciplinary." Please note: You are NOT required to select an "Option".
Step 5: Check the "I Agree" button.
Step 6: Click "Save".
Step 7: Notify your Parent/Guardian that you have completed Endorsement selection.
Below are directions for Parent/Guardian signatures:
Step 1: Parent/Guardian will log into Family Access.
Step 2: Select student who will be entering 9th grade.
Step 3: Select the Endorsement tab on the left side of the screen.
Step 4: Select sign next to "Guardian Signature is Required".
Step 5: Read the information and check the "I Agree" button.
Step 6: Click "Submit Signature".
8th Grade students will also need to submit their course plans through Career Cruising; the window will open March 7th and will close on March 24th.

Schedule Change Requests
No core or elective class change request will be accepted after January 20th.
There will be no exceptions after this deadline.
Communication is key in any working relationship. Stay up-to-date with your student's academics through the STEAM, individual teacher, and BISD websites as well as weekly grade level newsletters.
Who should you contact first in the event clarification is needed regarding your child?
Your child's teacher(s).
Our facilitators know your student and care about their success. If you have questions regarding assignments, behavior, or specific events, reach out to them.
Use this link to find individual teacher emails.
Attendance is of utmost importance. When students are absent, not only do they miss out on direct instruction, but also they have assignments that begin to pile up. While sometimes being absent is unavoidable, especially if a student has a fever or doctor's orders to stay home, if at all possible make sure they attend every day.
In Texas, students are required to attend school no less than 90% of the time, or to be absent no more than 17 days. When students pass 17 days of absences (EVEN excused with a doctor's note and partial absences) they are subject to loss of credit. Loss of credit means that they will not be given credit for courses.
We understand that sometimes absences are unavoidable but, if a student is in any way able to come to school it is important that they attend.
A Note From Nurse Shields
It’s National Dental Health Month!!
Lifelong habits begin at home. Make dental health part of your daily routine and share these reminders with your whole family:
Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, especially after breakfast and before bedtime. Drinking water after eating also helps to clear your teeth of food particles.
Floss every day!!
Limit the number of times you eat snacks, especially the sticky ones and long lasting ones.
Visit a dentist every 6 months for a routine check-up and a cleaning.
Protect your teeth by wearing a mouthguard when playing sports.
Don’t forget to change your toothbrush every 3 months, and after an illness.
Sweet snack facts:
-Eating a lot of snacks with sugar may cause cavities.
-Every time you eat sugar, plaque in your mouth mixes with the sugar to make acid. -The acid hurts the teeth and causes decay over time. This can be painful!
The STEAM Nurse can help you find a dental home for your family!
