Titan Talk Today - 1st Years: Beth Ann Norrgard
1st Years
The first years are currently ideating a sustainable housing idea that addresses a global economic, environmental, or societal need. They will pitch their ideas to a panel of facilitators next week. Once their idea is approved, they can move forward with researching and planning for their community.
The EarthX Expo will take place in Fair Park during the weekend of April 20-22. First years may be interested in attending this event to extend their learning concerning sustainable living solutions. This can be a fun, educational family weekend activity! Visit earthx.org for more information.
Our presentation day for Project Sustain will be on May 25 from 2-4pm. If you, a family member, or a friend are involved in sustainable living, the housing industry, or nonprofit organizations, we would love it if you can help evaluate presentations. We will send out more information about this event soon.
2nd Years
Are you game for an evening of games? Second year learners are putting the finishing touches on games they have developed for the their project, Quantum Leap. This project asked learners to design a game that addressed the question, “How do our encounters and confrontations shape our unique character?” By playing each game, a gamer should be able to understand and communicate how the interactions of different cultures define a sense of humanity through a historical or scientific issue or event. There will be board games, card games, and digital games. Some require strategy, others engage the audience through chance. Teams have been very creative in their development and production and hope to share their learning with guests during the 4th annual Acadacon hosted at the Academy on Tuesday, April 17, from 6:00pm to 7:30.
As you can imagine, the week leading up to this has been filled with fine tuning. Gamesmanship paused on Wednesday as learners spent most of the day on the End-of-Course Staar English II exam. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, May 8th. On that day the Biology End-of-Course Staar test will be administered.
Regional Science and Engineering Fair
4th Years
The 4th Year learners were met with two scenarios this week for Mars Attacks. The first challenge tasked the colonies to manage an influx of immigration from Earth. All 20 colonies were able to collaborate in a model of both the United Nations and World Trade Organization. For our purposes they were named the United Colonies and the Colonial Trade Organization. Each charter agreed to accept 5% of the immigrating population, and all colonies successfully resolved this scenario. The next scenario challenged the teams to control peaceful civil uprisings in their colony. The groups are excited to employ various tactics to approach this scenario. In addition to these experiences, content activities added to the project. In government, learners conducted research on various intergovernmental organizations and challenges for international trade. Learners, in English, continued to engage in a virtual collaborative interview process. This week they crafted questions that analyzed thematic issues in their self-selected texts. Time was also spent evaluating the questions posed by their peers and identifying the questions that are most representative of the interests of the group. Precalculus learners applied logarithmic rules to solve mathematical puzzles while Calculus learners applied integration concepts to depict population models.Time was also spent simulating a growth and decay scenario using a predator and prey model. In SRD learners prepared for their upcoming presentations, which will begin on April 23rd. Preparations included reviewing published abstracts, scripting, and creating the visual display of their tangible results/product.
