Mark your calendars to take part in our UI Alumni and Friends Flash Writing Contest—a free, timed short story writing competition for a variety of age groups. You don't have be an Iowa Writers' Workshop grad—or even remember your spelling bee vocabulary words from last year—to take part. We'll give you a genre, a character (e.g. bus driver), and a specific object to incorporate into your story. You'll get 48 hours and 1,000 words to come up with the rest. Please note, there is no preregistration for this event.

3rd Grade Cognitive Abilities Testing and ELP
2nd Grade Enrichment Begins
The Extended Learning Program (ELP) is the school district's educational program for high ability students. We have implemented changes to screening and services to students in kindergarten through second grade, in order to provide broader services to young students during their early developmental stages. The ELP teachers have looked at math data from the aMath assessments and collaborated with the 2nd grade classroom teachers to identify students who have strengths in the area of mathematics.
At this time, we are only offering enrichment for 2nd grade and hope to extend this to other grades in the future (while online).
As a result of this evaluation process, the top 5% of students are eligible for enrichment classes. These students have the opportunity to virtually meet with the ELP teacher once a week to work on math and analytical thinking skills. Please note that due to scheduling constraints, your child may miss some instructional time in their regular classroom for that once a week pull out class. Students will not be scheduled during their morning meeting, specials, and lunch times. If your child qualified, you will receive a letter from his/her classroom teacher.
The Mann group will meet on Thursdays from 11:00-11:30 AM at Mrs. Bradford’s ELP Zoom Link. We will begin Thursday, January 28th. If your child’s learning needs change, we will adjust his/her participation. Your child will have enrichment over this topic through the week of March 12, 2021. Participation in pull-out enrichment class does not automatically continue next year. Students will be re-assessed for services next year.
