February Newsletter
KINDERGARTEN NEWS
Kindergarten is excited about their field trip to see Snow White performed by actors at Northside High. Due to seating restraints no chaperones will be allowed. Don't worry we will have another fun field trip to the aquarium in April and chaperones will be welcome. Thanks for understanding!
February is the month of celebrations! We will celebrate our 100th day of Kindergarten in some super fun ways like making 100 day snack mix or making portraits of us at 100 years old. Counting to 100 is the goal in Kindergarten. Practice counting by 1's and 10's to 100 as you are driving. The teen numbers and transition numbers (29, 39, etc) are the big challenges.
We will also be celebrating Valentine's Day. What a great day to spend time with friends and put our 7 Habits into practice as we learn about being a good friend.
Our independent reading skills are growing. We are learning how to "chunk" letters together to help us solve unknown words. Word families such as "at" in rat, cat, sat are great ways to start recognizing how to chunk letters together.
Don't forget to send in Box Tops so your class can compete for the prize and help the school earn money.
FIRST GRADE NEWS
First grade is in LOVE with February. This month is full of exciting events!
Reading assessments are complete and now we have lots of great data and information to ensure each student’s needs are being meet in the classroom.
We will explore the traditions of the Chinese New Year, celebrate being 100 days smarter, share kind words on Valentine’s Day and grow as learners and leaders.
With it being such a busy month, please make sure you are checking your child’s folder daily, checking the school and classroom websites and read any texts or emails sent from school.
Thanks for being awesome!
SECOND GRADE NEWS
Please help us welcome Mrs. Lorri DeValois to our second grade team!
THIRD GRADE NEWS
Third graders are learning about idioms and other forms of non-literal language in English Language Arts. They are also learning how to use context clues to determine the meaning of academic, unknown, or difficult, words and phrases. In mathematics, students are continuing their study of elapsed time as well as building their multiplication and division skills.
Third graders are wrapping up their study of the solar system in Science. We have been experiencing a bit of an extraterrestrial invasion in the third grade hall, as you will see in our photos. In Social Studies, students are learning about the influence of historical figures and events on local and regional communities.
Our celebration for positive behavior will be this month to celebrate the students who have earned the designated amount of Dolphin Dollars and have received no referrals.
FOURTH GRADE NEWS
Please restock your child with necessary items for school. (Many students no longer have pencils, scissors, glue and highlighters and need them to complete work in class)
Please ask your child to share their experience with the field trip to Cape Fear Community College. We hope they enjoyed themselves and were inspired to think of their future.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
PE2
PE 2 is beginning our unit on Speed Stacks. Speed stacks (cup stacking) is a great activity for all ages and ability levels. It improves hand-eye coordination, focus/concentration, ambidexterity, right/left brain activation, and most of all, it is FUN!! There are many ways to incorporate speed stacking into PE to include relays, partner fitness challenges, and various stacking challenges. I would love for your child to have his/her own set of Speed Stacks and will be placing a group order at the end of February. If you'd like to order a set of Speed Stacks for your child, tell them to get an order form from me on their PE 2 day. The average cost if 19.99/set. And, if you'd like more information on the benefits and studies, visit SpeedStacks.com.
Happy Stacking!
